While both are becoming more mainsteam, and more people are getting into it, I don't see that or this happening within the next couple of years.

DTV, not HDTV.

Even if that is a reality by 2007 America will still be far behind these other countries. We won't be able to compete with South Korea and China is also moving up very fast. By 2007 other countries will have like 1gb/s up and down while we'll be paying more money and getting less speeds.

Also theres no way Bush will make that happen unless theres a tax increase. A big one, and it would be making things more socialist. Hmmm, government broadband where they monitor everything that you do.

Conjur has it right.

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions in this thread.

There is no federal mandate for HDTV. Only a mandate to switch to digital broadcasting.

If a map was made of the US showing areas with BB access in blue, and areas with no BB access in red, most of the map would be red.

My 2 cents: The way to make this happen is to deregulate, lower taxes on communications companies and encourage competition rather than government sponsered utility monopolies. The WRONG way to go about it is to socialize it by offering public funds to build it. There is no reason a company should be forced or bribed to offer unprofitable services. Unless, of course, you want a broadband service that runs like Amtrack.

Don't worry, with the tax increases that Kerry is proposing, we will be paying 50% of our income to the gov't anyway. I'm sure he'll find some time to make broadband more affordable inbetween lauging sessions (where he laughs at the gullibility and stupidity of the people who voted for him).

You would be paying more taxes if you make more than $200,000 a year. If you don't you'd be paying less taxes

I don't make that much now (far from it), but I would like to someday. It is not fair that the rich must carry the poor and middle. Everyone should be responsible for their own lives. Broadband and HDTV are not rights, they are privileges (luxuries).

Also, did Kerry release his budget yet? I'm curious where you got the $200,000 from.

I live in a quasi rural area & I'd like to see a law making the telecos drop the requirement to keep a phone line active to have DSL over the phone lines.

We have 4 cell phones in my house & have to keep a land line for the net?

What is this socialist crap? State copper? Let the rural areas have hippy coops... no one cares.

Next thing Bush will want is a state owned school system... or maybe state owned health care. Is this the USSA or something?

Bush won't want the state owned health care, you will, because you'd rather the gov't foot the bill for your granny to get her meds. Time to pay the piper.

This is the same thing as that 'lets go to mars' story...feel good horsesh|t that doesn't amount to anything.

If all of america gets broadband within the next ten years, it will be because BB over power lines is implemented. The telcos and cablecos are NOT going to foot the bill to send it to rural areas. And I don't want to see more deficit to make this a reality.

I'm all for it. I have no problem with the government subsidizing it and putting a boot in the ass of telecom companies to get it done. Normally I'm 100% capatilist but sometimes short term greed gets in the way and not only impedes progress but lets the already established infrastructure crumble. This can be seen with almost all utility providers. Co-ops are probably what will end up getting it done. To me it is no different than the Interstate system.

Yes broadband for all, provided we monitor all your activities online and get rid of that pesky thing called privacy.

No, I'm not being serious with that statement, just messing with people.

A perfect example. You seem to have all these strong opinions about things but not once have I seen you back them up with anything resembling an intelligent response.
