I REALLY hope Bush pardon's the Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compeon.
Just wondering why so many of you expect to see these two agents pardoned. Yes, they shot an alleged drug dealer at the border, but 1) the guy was unarmed, 2) they shot him from behind while he was running, 3) they fired 15 times and tried to cover up the incident.

I have no love for this Mexican scum drug dealer, but the cover up part I have a problem with -- as I do shooting someone in the back (got hit in the ass I think), which is cowardly. That makes these clowns typical dirty cops. Sorry, not exactly pardon material here. I don't think it's practical nor legal to have a 'shoot on sight' policy for illegals, as much as I'd LIKE to see terminators patrolling our border.

Great post!
I still think there was something else going on here, the border agents were trying to make a deal or ripoff the drug dealer when it went wrong.
I don't understand all of the people that think they are wrongly imprisoned.

Their sentences, otoh, could be excessive, but everyone votes for and applauds the police state, so don't bitch when it bites you in the ass.

lol wtf kind of conviction is that?
Could be why it's getting pardoned

Dave is just mad cause he never got his pardon from loading SETI on his clients computers.

Dave, start writing letters to President Obama. Probably what the guy with the fraudulent food stamp conviction did.

Surely there's a pardon on tap for Jeffrey Skilling! :D
Oh no!
I'm feelin' lucky, how 'bout you? ;)
Heh I wouldn't have made the bet if I hadn't! I think in today's financially unsound times he's even more unlikely to pardon a guy like skilling.

My local NYT newspaper ran this story prominently, odd considering that they recently downsized the size of the paper.

What is *newsworthy* about these pardons? Nothing as far as I can tell, the *real story* seems to be left's infatuation with this topic and their determination to make this an issue when it isn't (at least so far).

Dave, how about you take a look at Clinton's pardons, while you're at it. Oh wait, you're an idiot partisan hack. Never mind.

Courtesy of the DOJ, Clinton's last minute pardons.

Loving the drug references

Also of note a few charges
*Conspiracy to defraud a federally insured financial institution, false statements to a federally insured financial institution, wire fraud
*Conspiracy to corruptly solicit and accept money in return for influencing the official acts of a federal district court judge (Alcee L. Hastings), and to defraud the United States in connection with the performance of lawful government functions; corruptly influencing, obstructing, impeding and endeavoring to influence, obstruct and impede the due administration of justice, and aiding and abetting therein; traveling interstate with intent to commit bribery
*Conspiracy to defraud a federally insured savings and loan, misapplication of bank funds, false statements
*Securities fraud, record keeping violations, margin violations
*Racketeering conspiracy, racketeering, and violation of the Hobbs act
*Conspiracy to defraud the United States, and influencing or injuring an officer or juror generally
*Conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, conspiracy to export arms and ammunition to a foreign country and related charges

It would be interesting to get back stories. Again looking through the list a LOT of cocaine charges pardoned :p

They were never actually charged with such a crime...

As long as Bush has the electric Pardon Pen going...I wonder if I can have one too? :D

I don't see my Governor from the great state of Louisiana on this list , the now imprisoned Edwin Edwards . Went to the slam on federal racketeering charges . Surely in this time where we are all supposed to pull together for the good of the country, this two term Republican President can let off this sorry old loser .

Looks like Rice is trying to pardon herself:

12-7-2008 Rice regrets bad Iraq intelligence; defends war

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday she regrets the U.S. relied on flawed intelligence as the basis for going to war in Iraq and took partial responsibility for mismanaging the post-invasion occupation.

President George W. Bush ordered the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. It was a decision largely justified on grounds ? later proved false ? that Saddam was building weapons of mass destruction.

Good question, alchemize. But I have to guess as long as any pardons were signed by GWB on or before 11:59 AM of 1/20/2008, they could be released to the general public at some later date and still be valid.

But I find it hard to believe that GWB has not already pardoned many of his cronies by now, instead of the somewhat unrelated to his administration pardons already released.

Maybe GWB believes none of cronies will ever be prosecuted.

Or maybe, just maybe, he's more principled than Clinton (at least when it comes to pardons)?

Looks like anyone that can afford mega lawyer costs get a pass.

Obie Gene Helton of Rossville, Ga., whose offense was unauthorized acquisition of food stamps.
I'm sure he had an AWESOME lawyer Dave.

You have any idea on what's involved and how much it costs?
Bush Pardons Rossville Man On 25-Year-Old Food Stamp Conviction
posted November 24, 2008

A Rossville, Ga., man is one of 14 people whose presidential pardons were announced Monday by the U.S. Justice Department.

Obie Gene Helton was sentenced April 1, 1983, to two years probation for unauthorized acquisition of food stamps. He was fined $500 and ordered to pay $875 in restitution, according to information provided by the Justice Department.

Yeah he sounds like a high roller. I'm sure he's backed by some of the best lawyers Georgia has to offer. And he must have Washington in his pockets. Most people I know going for food stamps are high rollers too.

I have no idea what this guy did nor do I really care. I wanted you to understand though that there are a lot of scumbags who buy food stamps from strung out dope heads for like 30 cents on the dollar or something silly then they send it in to the government to get full reimbursement. No food is exchanged and they feeding drug addictions and lining their pockets with our taxpayer dollars meant to provide food and necessities to the poor. This is a pretty detestable crime IMO and often perpetrated from people with money taking advantage of the poor. I'm not sure if this is why Obie Gene Helton got punished but it seems like many people are reacting to just the words "food stamps". Personally I thikn the whole presidential pardon thing is kinda dumb and undermines our justice system.

The Presidential power to pardon is still an explicit part of the US constitution. Maybe at some future date, Presidential pardon abuses may get a movement started to amend the constitution. Until its amended out of the constitution, it stands is the IMHO end of that argument.

It probably should be amended out. It's silly that a single guy could at, at a whim, clear out the entire correctional system in the entire nation of all criminals
