there are numerous ways to level the playing field, a lot of it has to do with healthcare, and a lot of it has to do with the extreme drop in value of the dollar.

Actually it's improved about 15% against the yen in the past year CHART
don't quote financial stuff you have no clue what you're talking about

uh... i NEVER said anything about the past year... in general, what has the $ done...

So, over what time period. You have to be specific if you're making a claim.

He must be referring to the roaring 1990s when the asian tigers were pwning. Japan's Yen did double up against the dollar from about 1990-1995.

nope, just relating what i have read from magazines about its snap oversteer, and the fact that 95% of the U.S. population wouldnt know what to do if the car DID snap oversteer, or 50% of the U.S. wouldnt know how to drive a standard.

I read one time in a magazine that toyota is a crappy auto maker and that 67% of stats are made up on the spot!

yup, what people love to say is "foreign manuf's pay the same". they DO, but to a point. and that point is healthcare. GM really needs to make their healthplans less beneficial, prior to a few years ago (maybe even this year), GM's healthcare plan required NO co-pay, GM funded all of it, everything.

then you have History, and GM's history is long, the amount of retirees is high, if their pension plans werent so massive for the retirees, they again wouldnt be loosing near as much money, but i dont think 30 years ago when these pensions were signed, the CEO/CFO/CwhateverO were looking ahead to when the Japanese/Koreans would be completely raping GM.

I work in the auto industry as an engineer(NVH) right next to vehicle dynamics engineers and have never heard of snap oversteer before. care to explain?

Look, I usually defend you when people pounce on you but please show me where in this thread you have contributed anything except posting an article. I realize you live in Michigan and your family and friends are probably heavily dependent on the auto industry but that doesn't mean you know what you are talking about.

What do you want the government to do about health care? Chrysler didn't exactly get bailed out either. They received a loan with they paid back in record time. Giving GM or Ford any money in the current state of the world would be a bad investment and amount to nothing more than corporate welfare.

Why don't you address the real issue. Unions and pensions and irrelevant products. I'm sure you and your family would staunchly defend the unions and outdated bloated wages, right? So where are the answers coming from? The governor of Michigan isn't going to accept the reality of the union problem. How should the president level the playing field? Tariffs? That is the stupidest thing EVER.

basically, an unexpected change in the way the car is handling. A certain Porsche (dont remember which) experiences Lift-Off Oversteer, which is where it decides it suddenly wants to oversteer when you lift off the gas, well the Z06 supposedly does this suddenly when its near the limit it just decides it wants to Oversteer suddenly as well.

It's a term that pseudo-motor heads pull from magazines to sound knowledgeable. No offence MIKEMIKE.

Sorry, I don't know why I thought you lived in Michigan and when I wrote that you hadn't said anything relevant to the topic. Answer my question. What is the president supposed to do? I realize benefits and pensions are a big problem but what is your solution? The unions aren't going to budge enough to make any real difference.

Many of the problems that plague the car makers are there fault. they got themselves into the mess they need ot get out.

ill admit they got themselves into it, but Chrysler was once in the same jam, and the Gov't bailed them, i guess the Gov't doesnt like to follow its own examples.

Yea...something Jimmy Carter, the worst president in history, signed off on. Let's repeat that idiot's legacy.

NO BAILOUT! let them bleed it out...these mofos created their own mess...why should i paid taxes to help these turds?!?!?!?!?!?!

carter was an idiot!

Ford might be worth bailing out...they're at least making an effort to be competetive, but GM...it's like they're not even trying.

i REFUSE to stay in P&N, there are two COMPLETELY seperate viewpoints in those forums and i cant stand it. so i posted it here where i will actually discuss it.

I don't think there is much to discuss. Having the President somehow increase the profits of the automakers is just so asinine it can only be described as cheer idiotic doucheness to even consider it.

I think your only goal is to stir the proverbial pot for no apparent reason.
Good job

I beg to differ. I believe this is GM management's shrewd tactic and strategery. They are purposely running it to the ground now so that they can do a Chatper 11 reorg and kill the unions and try to get out of the pensions. I think it just might work. I will put some money in GM stock right before it emerges from bankruptcy, if they succeed in those 2 things.
