I dunno, I had a window open and heard people laugh outside when Bush said 'transhipmenting.' Damn neighbors. Normally I'd agree with that totally, but that was a lot of tap-dancing coming from W...

Edit: Or was it 'tranship'?

Bush looked bad and his answers were just poor at best. And did you see the shots of how Bush looked when Kerry was talking? Bush just looked real bad and he appeared to have no answers.

Allow me to be more precise.

The vast majority of voters who are "undecided" do not phrase debates in the terminology of "Bush got pwned". I know you think the 200-1000 or however many odd members of AT represent the general population, but they don't.

IMHO, "undecided" voters will not vote for Kerry based on this debate, and he'll turn more people away than he'll draw. His message:

"Yah, I voted for it. But you didn't read my footnotes and screwed it up. So now I'll come in and fix it". That's not gonna fly. People won't change leaders midstream, it ins't "bad enough" yet (to the dismay of the leftists).

Don't kid yourself, Bush got owned big time. Whether that translates into votes for Kerry or not is another question.

Didn't vote in last election, but it didn't matter (CA). Will definitely be voting in this election... even though I still live in CA and it probably won't matter.

Voting for Kerry. Bush did well but got pwned.

Not sure why I stopped off in this thread. I'll see if there is another where it isn't populated by children and Leftist Mutual Massage sessions.

Kerry spoke more smoothly, but Bush nevertheless was clear about his objectives. I especially liked the delievery of Bush's closing arguments. I terms of content (I might be saying this because I support Bush over Kerry), Bush was the winner (especially in terms of how Kerry glossed over the flip-flop accusations with broad, feel-good statements that gave philosophy but failed to justify the specific change of views of which he was accused (like the $87 billion dollar troop support fund)). And Bush delivered the message adequately.

First of all, we don't have basement in California. Secondly, why do I have to spend any thought on answering you? After all, it doesn't really take much to upset someone with a 7 yrs old personality.

After giving it some more thought, as the opponent of an incumbent president, I don't think this debate was a slam dunk for Kerry. Kerry was more composed and articulate than Bush, but we already knew he would be. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't all Kerry really say was that he would do the same things Bush was doing, just do them better? And does that really count for substance?

You totally missed the "better" part.

I went into the debate with an open mind, I think, and frankly afraid that Bush would win by backing Kerry into a corner and making him look awkward and halting. I definitely have a bias in terms of my vote, but I was prepared to acknowledge Bush as a winner if he won.

I'd have to say Kerry won by a country mile. He came off as smart, very knowledgeable, and appropriately aggressive. Bush seemed petulant and angry to me.

One thing competent trial attorneys learn very quickly is never to let your opponent (or worse yet, the jury) see you sweat. When you're not speaking, you don't want to look angry, frustrated, surprised, disappointed, jubilant, or anything else that makes you look less than composed.

One of the most obvious aspects of the debate to me was the fact that, when President Bush was speaking, Sen Kerry stood calmly, listened carefully, and showed no emotion. When Kerry was speaking, President Bush looked openly flustered and angry, and frantically took notes (you could hear his pen frantically scratching away, whereas Kerry did no such thing when Bush was speaking). He repeatedly demanded more debate time, and several times he was obviously too flustered to immediately start talking when it was his turn.

I was also generally impressed with Sen Kerry's ability to articulate substantive positions and plans, whereas President Bush, when he was uncomfortable, kept returning to catch phrases and cliches.

I don't know whether this debate will change minds and gain votes, but it definitely gives Sen Kerry some much-needed momentum. I still think President Bush is the front runner, but this debate set the stage for an interesting October.
