Bush dismisses calls for Iraq withdrawal.

The president, at a news conference with Mr. Maliki after a meeting in Jordan, directly referred to reports the day before that the bipartisan Iraq Study Group would recommend to him next week that the United States begin a substantial troop pullout in the near future. Some analysts have suggested that the report could offer a face-saving way for Mr. Bush to begin withdrawing from Iraq, but he adamantly rejected that view.

Why?

Do you believe the PM that they'll be ready by June? If 150,000 US military personnel can't keep the peace, then I don't know what will.

I guess the PM of Iraq needs to quit thinking about that crazy idea of democracy that we gave them and do what we tell them to do...

Well, perhaps our presence there IS the catalyst for more violence. Granted that they're killing each others there, but they're killing us in the process. It's a lose-lose situation.

We tried to install democracy there, that part is done. Now, let them try their hands at rebuilding their country, whatever that's left of it. I wouldn't be surprised if the new democracy in Iraq would turn out to be our enemy one of these day.

I know what some of you are thinking, but we don't have enough resources militarily to setup another base there at the moment.

Perhaps it is, but I don't think the violence will end if we leave, either.

There is absolutely no change in the entire Iraq debacle. It's simply "stay the course." Truly incredible.

"Ready to take over security in June of 07'." -Iraqi PM

Just put Saddam or another Saddam-like figure back in power while you are at it.

Oh it well end but only after a very bloody civil war. Then we can deal with whoever controls the country. You wont have any pro-US elements in charge though because once we leave that element will leave with us if they haven't done so already.

I agree 100%

I woke up in the middle of the night and happened to see that news conference live. It made me absolutely livid. It is obvious that GWB learned absolutely no lesson from the recent election and is bound and determined to continue the US's involvement in Iraq unabated through the remainder of his term. His statements consisted mostly of his usual slogans and rah-rah patriotic cheerleading. His continued incompetence and tunnelvision amazes me.

On a positive note, Congressman Shays (R-CT) in enroute now to Iraq to meet with the Prime Minister and let him know, in no uncertain terms, that Congress will not sit still for unlimited involvement. He will carry a proposal that will require Iraq (and it's population, via a vote) to confirm a definate plan to end the US involvement. If they disagree under Shays' plan, we will leave them to their own devices.

I didn't hear that. Thats great news if its true.

Well, if we leave now, of course millions of people will die (but, that's the rish I'm willing to take 😛). But the wounds will heal, and we won't have anymore deaths on our side. Civil war or not, the country will eventually fix itself, and hopefully when it does we have re-energized ourselves to offer any meaningful help at that point. If they turn out to be a rogue state, then we'd know exact what to do with them right? I know this is not the best solution, but at least it has a viable resolution.

Besides, it's not the first time in history that we have engaged in these plights and left countries in shamble; at least we'll be consistence.
