Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their ?common faith? (Christianity) and told him: ?Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East?. The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled?. This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people?s enemies before a New Age begins.?
Subsequently, ex-President Chirac confirmed the nutty event in a long interview with French journalist Jean-Claude Maurice, who tells the tale in his new book, Si Vous le Répétez, Je Démentirai (If You Repeat it, I Will Deny), released in March by the publisher Plon.
Canada?s Toronto Star recounted the story, calling it a ?stranger-than-fiction disclosure ? which suggests that apocalyptic fervor may have held sway within the walls of the White House.?

:Q

What do you think of the veracity of these claims? We certainly know that many people involved in the Iraq invasion seemed to have a crusades, endtimes, Biblical mindset. What they seem to forget, is that the US has been intervening in the Middle East for years. What made Operation Iraqi Freedom so special?

I like this line:

"Oddly, mainstream media are ignoring this alarming revelation that Bush may have been half-cracked when he started his Iraq war."

I search Google and it takes the 4th page of links before I see anything remotely resembling something other than a left-wing blog site. Did he say something like that? Sure, probably. What was the context? Was he joking around? Or was he serious? Context is everything, and knowing that the media hasn't touched this one bit, I'd say the chances this is bullcrap is quite high.

...And Barak Obama is the first African American President so if Hollywood or TV has taught me anything it is now "the near future" and a meteor is heading for the earth, and atomic bomb is about to off in LA, or a virus that is going to wipe out the world's population is jumping from ape to man.

I remember one of Iraqi clerics preaching that crusader alliance is out to destroy them and that image of tanks photo-chopped to carry crusader flag. It makes sense in a away, since all "invaders" are in fact mostly christian. ALSO that lil CITADEL we build in Baghdad sure reminds me of old school fortress-city.

I don't know who Gog and Magog are, but if they're anything like Gork and Mork, then Mork was behind 9/11, and Gork was waiting for us in Iraq.

I understand the allegory but it would be beyond Chiracs understanding. The metaphor would be unknown to most. Understanding Bush's upbring it's not overly surprising, but inapproiate. Interesting historical trivia though.

Yeah, doesn't seem unbelievable at all, not with what we already know about Bush. This seems to fit nicely with a number of statements from W himself, in addition to those memos and briefs made for him by that super pious evangelical, Don Rumsfeld.

Bush, by virtue of not being very smart at all, was a malleable tool who was put to use by the likes of Rumsfeld, Cheney, and that wonderful guy Pat Robertson. I'm hoping that as time goes on and more unsavory details of that admin are exposed, that the majority of voters will realize that anti-intellectuals like W are definitely not president material.
