Harvey, it's the kind of rabid drooling that you did in your post that's part of the problem. You don't want to deal with reality, you want perfection. Since it will never be a perfect world there will always be mistakes. Since there will be mistakes, why not save the money. Instead of doing something, let's make it look like doing something. Guys like Harvey won't jump on us any harder if there's a mistake and we can make them feel like we're doing something. A classic example of this is Senator DiFi from my own home state of California. When 9/11 happened she said, "Let's get all of the foreign students out of the country." We also shut down the Mexican border in spite of the fact that it had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11. But, it looks like we're doing something. Carumba Harvey! No administration can make the borders air tight.
Sheesh! Save my poor, tired eyes. If you're going to pedal that much bullsh8 in your lame attempts to apologize for the admin's incompetence, it would be nice if you'd put some spaces in there! :p

Don't bring 9/11 into this, you really don't want to. With everything that happened before 9/11, it is a surprise that 9/11 didn't happen much sooner.

So you're bringing Katrina into this? Why must must we insult mother nature?

Stick to one topic. Oh, this was another chance for you to take a shot at him. Too good to let it go. Take any opportunity to take a shot at Bush, even if subjects are not related.

It is a good thing though to do this kind of thing. The people who did this knew exactly how to get past the security. I think we can assume that the real bad guys would know the same. Oh yeah and Bush sucks (had to get that in while I had the chance).
It's all relevant only because they're all examples of the Bush admin's total incompetence on every significant issue, one after another. It would be like watching an old Keystone Kops routine if the effects wern't so devastating to the nation. :(

You will find that many liberals do not want to protect our borders.

For those who are reasonable understand that this is neither a liberal nor conservative, Republican nor Democrat problem. This is a problem that is supported by so many that the politicians refuse to do anything about it but talk.

For you libs, remember, Hillary claims she will protect our borders but she also states that too many die crossing into our nation so they can shop and visit friends. Thus, she favors an open border that is closed.

Unfortunately, she is not alone. Bush says the same things. While he is not a conservative he is a Republican.

Nice to see this administration has failed yet again to keep America secure. Everything Kerry said during his campaign in 2004 re: port security, border security, chemical/nuclear plant security is still true today. But, good thing we're dumping billions per week in Iraq making more and more enemies every day.

Kerry didnt go anywhere did he? Why doesnt he get to work and trying fixing these obvious issues?

This story is just another classic example of how ineffective our central govt is.

And just how exactly is Kerry going to do that when he is not in a position to do so?

Is Kerry now unable to present bills before the senate to fix these glaring issues? Is this where we fall into the woe is me democrat syndrome we see so much of in DC?

Are you that ignorant? Seriously.

What are the odds a bill introduced by Kerry will go anywhere in the GOP-controlled Congress? Hell, I doubt he could even get an amendment passed.

No, it's facing reality.

Want me to start posting links to bills/amendments that would have been the best legislation but were shot down by the controlling GOP?

Might take a few days to list them all.

I have to agree to some extent that this kind of stuff will always be possible in a free society- it's the price we pay.

OTOH, the Bush Admin has made a tremendous amount of noise and accomplished very little, other than making the wealthy more secure-

All Hat, No Cattle.

I am no Bush administration fan. Quite the opposite. But I really don't think you can blame this on any particular aministration. It's in the nature of smuggling and covert activities that they will succeed against fixed defenses. If a Democratic or Libertarian or whatever administration comes into power it will still be possible to smuggle dirty bombs into the U.S.

Agreed. Fixed defenses are mostly useless, or at least not a very good use of money. The best defense, as the old saying goes, is a good offense. Our best anti-terrorist money is in intelligence and military operations that get the terrorists before they strike, get them no matter what their plans are. All the billions spent on airport security wouldn't do squat against an attack on the New York Subway...but billions spent to track and arrest terrorists would stop them no matter what they had planned.

This isn't a defense of Iraq, btw. Offense is important, but not all offense is created equal. Poorly focused offense has all the weaknesses of defense, without the at least marginal protection defensive spending provides.
Actually, the saying is the opposite: "The best offense is a good defense."

Are you sure?

Eh, in any case, I stand by what I said.

Ayup...it's defense that usually wins teams the big game. :)

I'll give you a good offense is important but when that offense is offensive that problems arise.

Oh, I agree about offense. That's why I qualified what I said with that bit about Iraq. The concept of fighting terrorists abroad so we don't have to fight them here, hunting them down, etc and all that noise, isn't a fundamentally bad idea. The problem is that our offense is poorly targeted. Not just in choice of targets, but in our application of violence. To borrow a saying that I have right this time ( ;)), not only are we blowing up the house to kill the termites, but we're not even blowing up the right house.

I assume that this means they didn't try to do it by sneaking it across the border, but rather by trying to pass through a border crossing?

Presumably they could sneak enough stuff across the border by crossing the border illegally to blow up every major U.S. city simultaneously.

Well, transporting something like that over rough terrain would be rather difficult.

Hmm...I wonder how closely the FAA is watching flights that cross into US territory. Although, I'd imagine a small plane or even a helicopter could evade radar by flowing low enough.

Point of this thread is, though, that this administration has sold us on the premise that it's keeping us safe, presumably by having invaded Iraq, yet it ignores the potential threats and security gaps right here at home.
