Burnt popcorn smell eventually goes away. Someone at work manages to burn his/her popcorn once every couple weeks. It smells for a few days but it goes away with use. Being this is your personal microwave, though, it'll probably take longer. The microwaves at work are probably used 40-50 times/day.

BTW, be glad it's just burnt popcorn. If you really want to create a horrid smell, microwave some raisins for a few minutes or until they begin smoking. Ugh. But be prepared to sleep somewhere else for a while.

I burnt some popcorn a few months ago. With casual use (my roommate and I) using the microwave about once a day, the smell wasn't noticeable after about 3 weeks or so.

buying a new m/wave

Put water and sliced lemons in a styrofoam cup and microwave it for a minute or two...it should loosen any debris you have in there and leave the microwave with a nice lemony scent.

LoL, my problem was I had previously used the popcorn button with greats results, but this time I had set it to what the old m/wave nuked the popcorn. Nedless to say, there's a huuuge difference in time between the two (plus I think the bag was defective). I said we paid $450 for it, that was a typo, it was $350 with install (new kitchen as well, to the tune of $13k, so $350 was a drop in the bucket. Damn guys, you think PC hardware is pricey ... try renovating a kitchen from the floor up. With our budget, I should be typing this on a Celeron 800 !!
