Burnt Popcorn Smell

About a week ago my sister burnt a bag of popcorn in the microwave almost to the point of flames. It took about 2 days for the smell to leave our house, but the microwave still REEKS! How do I get this smell out? I've tried lemon oil and some mixture that the manual suggested (Basil, Lemon juice, vinegar, etc), but nothing worked. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated (other than buying a new microwave, which may happen if all else fails). Thanks in advance!

YES! Every time we stick food in there it (the microwave) stinks, not to mention that the food smells like the burnt popcorn when it comes out--VERY unappetizing!

I hate those popcorn poppign fvckers here at the office. They always popcorn in the microwave and the foul smell gets sucked into the vents. I can tolerate it when I'm watching a movie or at a ballgame, but when I'm trying to work, that's just not cool....I'd much rather breathe stagnent office smells rather than microwave popcorn smells.

Roll up a big ball of aluminum foil and microwave it for 10-20 minutes. The heated foil will absorb any residual odors from the surrounding surfaces. Don't worry - the sparks and fire means that its working.

that happened in our office... and yeah the smell sucks and there is almost nothing you can do about it, except clean it often and continue to use it...

after a few weeks (maybe even closer to two months) the smell went away... but this is a big office and the nuker gets used a lot, so maybe all the different foods suppressed the smell??

haha i'm no help am i?

=)

I love the smell of popcorn in the office. Assuming it's not burnt, of course.

You don't get it out ...I did this 3 weeks ago and trudged off to the bathroom without checking on it. The smoke .. OMG ... I couldn't even open my eyes long enough to FIND the microwave !!! Needless to say, a nasty brownish stain has baked itself into the bottom half of the microwave. Every time we nuke something now, that horrible burned smell comes back ... this is on a microwave that isn't even a year old, so it would be a $450 replacement.

I feel your pain ... even if it was a simple mistake, it haunts you for years.

Wash it out with 409 entirely. then put a box of baking soda in it for a week or so.
that will take the smell out.

Ex roomate left us a parting gift. Mirowaved a spaghetti meatball for 1 hour the day he moved out. I was PIZZED.

sao, that might help the microwave clean out (not a lot), but it will do nothing to remove the burned popcorn smoke residue thats in the exhaust fan assembly. Trust me, no one on the werld wide intarweb has a surefire method for removing that internal smell (short of buying a new m/wave).

Could try computer dust spray.

Yea, the smell will never leave. Ever..

If you love that microwave, you might want to try leaving it outside in the sun with the door open, with the cavity pointing up. That can get rid of alot of smell. The sun breaks it all down for you.

Turn the mircowave on its backside. Then open the door fill with color-safe bleach.Set the timer for 25:00 minutes. Problem solved.

Don't remember the last time I had microwave popcorn. But people in the office have done it and burnt it, and the smell lingered for months.
