BurnProof or Justlink....

It seems like these are the two most prevalent buffer underrun protections out there. and I was curious about people's opinions about them. Obviously a lot of people are going to prefer BurnProof because the Plextors use it and everyone loves a Plextor But from what I've read Justlink leaves a smaller gap (significantly smaller too) than Burnproof, something like 40um with BurnProof and just 2 um with Justlink (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). So waddayall think? There must be some other features, other than the size of the gap, that I don't know about as well.

Yeah but since a CD will ignore up to about 100, you are ok with either.

Yeah, the point is that you should get something that protects against buffern under-runs. Either way, you're set.

I agree with you guys, but what made me question it was this article here on Tom's Harware, where he says that the AOpen CDwriter with Justlink has NO buffer Underrun protection. And incidentally, that's the drive that I have, and since I've had buffer underruns that have been saved by Justlink I thought either Tom or I was out to lunch. Hmmmm, it seems it's Tom who is out to lunch.....

Yeah, I noticed that in that article as well. The person that wrote the article must be unaware of the different buffer underrun protections available and that BURNPROOF is not the only one.

Normally I really enjoy Tom's site, but this CD-R review was really sub-par. I'm shocked that he didn't bother to include the OTHER 24x CD-R on the market... PLEXTOR. Considering that Plextor is the (or at least one of the) market leader(s) among hardware phreakies such as ourselves, and that is Tom's audience, one would assume that he would include that drive in his review.

There were many other issues I had with that review, but that one is the most glaring.

I also read his 802.11 "primer" yesterday and found it rife with errors. Well perhaps they aren't errors, but he certainly had different information than what I've seen about 802.11 in the past. For example, he stated that 802.11a has one 85 MHz channel in the 5.8 GHz range. I was under the VERY STRONG impression that 802.11a has three 100-MHz channels in the 5.0 GHz range! I could be wrong (I haven't had a chance to check up on this yet) but if I'm not, I will be VERY disappointed in Tom and his staff...

do you have the 1323? I looked into buying the aopen 12x burner and saw an article explaining that they had some issues with the 1323 and that there was a replacement: the 1323a. Apparently the Justlink on the 1323 original was not functioning properly. And I can validate that the 1323a has already informed me of underruns that were avoided by Justlink. Could just be saying that I s'pose..hehe. Just my 2 cents.

Essentially they are the same technology.

BurnProof and JustLink are technologies that prevent buffer under-runs while burning CDs, and so prevent coasters.

BurnProof is a technology created by Sanyo. When recording is suspended, a gap of approximately 45 microns (writing at 12x) is created. CD readers will ignore gaps up to 100 microns in length. This means that the gap created by the suspension of writing will be ignored...to all intents and purposes the CDROM will never know that writing was stopped.

JustLink is a technology from Ricoh that does exactly the same, except that the gap is approximately 6 microns in length.

BurnProof version 2, has the gap cut down to 5 microns in order to compete with JustLink. Older CDRWs with BurnProof version 1, cannot be upgraded to version 2. For example, the Plextor 12/10/32A features BurnProof v1, while the 16/10/40A features BurnProof v2.

Both BurnProof and JustLink require software support.

jdwright: You know I don't even know what version of the drive I have And I'm not at home to check. I do know that I have also been informed that Justlink was activated and the disk I copied seemed to work fine Anyway, I'm quite happy with the drive, especially for the price (CAN$167).

A week ago, I picked up the Aopen CRW-1232A (12x10x32) for a friend to built a new system. It has "Justlink" printed on the front of the tray and uses Nero 5 that came with it. It is my understanding that Nero is currently the only burner SW that supports Justlink technolgy. There is a review of this CD-RW at storagereview.com. It works real good and for $85 it is a bargain. As I recall, there is also a model CRW-1232 that does not have Justlink. The "A" makes a difference.

the aopen 1232a was just a designation that the cd-rw had justlink...the regular 1232 does not have any buffer underrun program hence the 4mb buffer...ie yamaha and its 8mb buffer...some call waste proof...

There are no issues that I know of with the 1232...the a was just to signify it was different...

There was an article recently that explained pretty detailed the workings of burnproof (the older technology of the 2) and justlink...it had concluded both worked effectively but that the justlink was a better program....can't remember reasons or arguments.
