Burnouts or "peeling out"

Aside from compensating for a deficiency somewhere else on a personal level, what's the point of someone "power braking" or "neutral dropping", etc.?

I understand heating the rubber to prep for a launch or race is one thing, but I'm talking about stuff seen/heard on the street or even in parking lots!

I find that "chirping" second or third gear far more resounding of acceleration and power particularly if both driven wheels spin when changing gears under way! :awe:

What do the "hot rodders" in the community think?

There is no aside from compensating for a deficiency on some personal level, the only reason for even a moment of losing traction with the wheels is to either warm the tires or lack of control to the point you lose acceleration by hitting the gas too hard for what the tires can handle.

On the other hand, whipping a car around out of control can be fun like an amusement park ride, till you hit something or get a ticket.

So, what personal deficiency do you feel you have that you are making up for by trying to feel superior to these people you are describing (especially given that you needed to share your feelings of superiority with us)?

I don't drive, just observing it. They seem to do it more around crowds so they are obviously looking for attention. I suppose it's the same as the kids in their four cylinder cars with coffee can tips that sound like a two cycle leaf blower! :biggrin:

Most of it is done just for attention but there is competition for this besides reg drag racing... But in all reality its just loss of traction which translates into loss of acceleration...

Ferzerp I do not see anything that Rubycon said about feeling superior...? You might consider this is not the place for this sort of prodding which is nice name for this type of response...

I'm with you Rubycon, a good chirp 1st-to-2nd or 2nd-to-3rd is much more satisfying, and exhibits a greater understanding of the skinny pedal and what it takes to keep traction in 1st.

Only people who have weak cars are excited by wheelspin because it makes them feel powerful and superior compared to other weak cars.

If you have a powerful car, constant unintentional wheelspin is a real headache and you go through great pains to reduce or eliminate it. Nothing sucks more than letting someone being a douche while having half your power get a lead on you because of traction problems.

Also burnouts are a demonstration of power. If you have to do tricks like neutral dropping or waiting until it rains to spin the tires, it defeats the whole purpose of a burnout in displaying power. If you have any business showing off and doing burnouts, all you should have to do is press the accelerator, nothing more.

I hear obnoxious sound systems all the time. The only time I see someone doing a burnout is at a car show or at cruise-ins. Never in traffic at a stop light. I'm not sure how common you think it is.

I'm not in that subset, but don't you see the issue there? There is a "prodding" quality to the thread itself.


One can pose the question "Why do people do this, I don't get it?" and that's pretty neutral, but "[a]side from compensating for a deficiency somewhere else on a personal level" looks a lot like "prodding" to me.

But what I quoted from you Ferzerp was a very clear form of what I will bring in the open and say "trolling"... If your offended by Rubycon's post then either report it or stay out of the thread and do not try to provoke using the type of response that you did... Also the OP did ask a real question about it but a question is not answered with a question unless there may be other intent...

BTW...Rubycon or any other member is welcome in ATG unless they persist in "trolling" and to coin a phrase (do you get my drift)...

A while back some retard commenced a full long drawn burnout sitting at a light in a V6 Mustang filling the road with solid white smoke. He was boxed in by traffic, no other sporty cars around, nobody "challenging" him, just randomly decided to do a burnout for the duration of the red light. Unfortunately I was in a Camry at the time or I'd have canceled my current business and followed until we got side by side and embarrassed him for being stupid.

Another time was some chest thumping neanderthal trying to race my Cobra in his big bad lifted chromed out autozone exhaust truck. After I shrugged him off and blew by we got stopped at a red light and he had to pull up next to me and do a burnout. Soon as he took off on green I tied his ass to a tree a second time before even hitting 60. He must have drove 25 the rest of the way because I never saw him again.

My car is unable to spin the tires unless there's snow on the ground.
