I have a ASUS board and an Intel PGA 478 Prescott processor @ 3.0 Ghz. It is currently cycling between 75-77 C. I am thinking that this is really hot. What should i do? Is there anything out there that can allow me to set the CPU fan RPMs? Or should I just go out and buy a new HS and fan?

Check the cooling in the case itself. Do you have ample airflow? Is there "cable clutter" blocking airflow? Are you overclocking anything? Also, you DO know that Prescotts (S478 versions in particular) run fairly hot, right?

I have a 3.0E S478 and it never gets above 55C with the stock cooler and pad.

77C is not normal for that chip.

I suspect some sort of problem. Either a bad reading, bad HSF install, poor airflow, poor thermal material application, or something else. :D

I know that they run hot, but not this hot. I have three case fans+psu fan+cpu fan. Might be the install. Been meaning to go out and buy a new HSF assembly. Will that void the warranty of the CPU?

Try running throttlewatch. If it were really that hot, it'd be throttling I believe.

Ok, its is running at around 57C @ Idle and 75C under load. Is this still not good?
