Burning in new system

What is 'burning in' a system?

I'm putting together the following componets;

Abit Kt7-RAID
tbird 900
Prophet 2 GTS 64
SB Live


Am I supposed to do anything special to 'burn it in'?

Nope, you don't have to do anything special.

Seems like burning in is just that period right after you finish building everything when you should run a variety of programs to make sure the computer is stable.

Burning in is actually put it on a shrine and worship it for 3 days for such a nice system before using it.

I'd just check stability by running Prime95 for a few days.

burn in is really just stress testing these days. Also, you are supposed to burn in thermal pads on HSFs.
