burning cd-rws

hey guys...i'm kinda new at this so bare with me k?
I bought some cd-rws today and wanted to backup some computer stuff with it.
I got in on the compusa deal so the software that i'm using to burn it is easy cd creator.
Is there anything differently that i need to do to burn a cdrw than a cdr?

cause what i'm doing now is I added some new files, and clicked on the create cd button.
but now it keeps telling me to insert the destination cd into the drive, even though it's already in there.

someone please help 🙂

thanks in advance

You use then just like regular write once cd's if you using Easy CD Creator mastering software. It is the same stetps that you have used before. I would suggest you try and erase your cd-rw disk to see if it is detected.

Unless you installed and are using Direct CD. That will require that you format the CD first.

I'm kinda new to the cd-rw scene too...having only used cd-r's before. I now have the plextor 12/10/32. I went to staples today and was looking around and the fastest write speed I could find cd-rw's made for was 4x...what's up with that?!? Do they make 10x cd-rw's? You do have to use the correct rated speed with these, right?

I know for sure Imation makes 10x CDRWs. I just bought a 5 pack myself.

At 10x, DirectCD is finally a viable option.

yeknomboy,
You have to erase CDRW's to use them again if you don't use DirectCD. You can use CDRWs like you would a CDR in Easy CD Creator, though I'd use CDRs for more permanent storage in that case.

You gotta reformat the cdrw. CDr/rw 's aren't as convenient as floppies. They're more like phonograph disk. If the cdr/rw isn't full, you can create a new session. You don't need any other software. CDR and CDRW software are one in the same.

yeknomboy, with your Adaptec software you should have also received and installed a program called DirectCD. Simply put, CD Creator is used when you want to make a copy of a CD, or construct either a data or music CD out of files. DirectCD is used when you want to format a CD-RW and store files on it, much like you store files on a floppy, except you have approx. 550MB formatted capacity on a CD-RW, vs. 1.4MB on a floppy.

Once you've formatted the CD-RW (DirectCD will ask you if you want to format, when you fire up the program), you can move files to and from it from within Windows Explorer, just like you typically move files. Note that formatting will take approx. 45 minutes, unless you have an HP CD-RW drive, which has a fast format feature. This simply moves the formatting to a background process, and let's you begin to move files to the disc w/i a few minutes.

You only need to format the CD-RW once, then you can add and remove files just like you do on a floppy. You can reformat, if you would want to wipe it clean.

Yes, they do make 10x cdrw discs, but they aren't as widely available as the 4x discs. My Plextor 12/10/32 scsi drive came with a Verbatim 10x speed cdrw disc and I've just been reusing it over and over when I don't want to waste a cdr.🙂

So, Can i do directCD with a CD-R too? or is it just for the CD-RWs?
and how compatible would the direct cd foremated disk be to like other cd-rom drives?
Would I have to use an iomega drive to be able to read from it?
thanks!

DirectCD would only do CDRW discs... CDR's are write once, so you couldn't write a file and then write more files in that file's place afterward. That's what a CDRW disc is for. Formatted RW discs aren't likely to be able to be read by normal CD-ROM drives as far as I know, but can someone confirm whether I'm correct or not? Thanks in advance!

GoldenTiger's right, you'll want to use Easy CD Creator for CD-R's. When you fire up the program you're presented w/ choices, to create an audio CD, a data CD, or back up a disc. One of the options are to leave the session open so you can add more files. When the session's open you can't read from it, but once you close it, it can be read by other drives.

Only the newer CD-ROM and DVD drives can read CD-RW discs. My advice is don't count on a drive, other than another CD-RW, to read CD-RW discs. You can get older CD-ROM drives to read CD-R's w/ a free utility from Adaptec/Roxio called a UDF reader.

I have a couple of ideas for you:

1) Ditch adaptec and us Nero, it is a superior burning program.

2) Why bother with CD-RW discs? I mean CDs are like free-25 cents a piece now, might as well just make a permanent copy. Go to Outpost.com, Kingston Hypermedia 13.95 for a 50 pack spindle. I have been through 400 of these and the only coaster I made was my fault. (you can always find free ones too)

ya, but i got a few of these for free so i'm trying them out 🙂

well it seems when i tried to format this stupid thing using directcd, it kept on quiting in the middle of it and i don't understand why.

what's nero, and where can i get the program?

yeknomboy, what version of DirectCD are you using? To determine the version, minimize all other appls. on your desktop, fire up DirectCD, go to the top of the page, and find the version. Otherwise go to Help and find the version there (you'll need a CD-RW in the drive to get past the first few screens). If it's version 4.0 you can go to Roxio software and download the appropriate update.

A friend of mine recently bought a Plextor EIDE 8x4x32 drive and experienced the same lockup until he updated the Adaptec software.

Actually DirectCD works fine for working with CD-Rs. The only differences in function between CD-R and CD-RW with DirectCD are:

1. You don't have to format the CD-R before writing to it.

2. When you "erase" files on CD-R you are only removing the TOC references. In other words, you don't reclaim the disc space.

When ejecting a CD-R in DirectCD you can choose to leave the disc "as is" (session open, ready to write just like a CD-RW), close the session but leave the disc open (requiring you to "make disc writable" before you can write more to it), or close the session and prevent the disc from being written to again (which is pretty much what it says).

Jim

I just double clicked on the system tray icon and it started up the format screen for direct cd, and on there it says 3.01.

i'm gonna try the update

thanks!

actually....
do you know where i can get a newer version than the one I have...like a complete new installation? or do I have to buy the software? 😀
cause the direct cd can only be updated from my 3.01 to 3.03...
I'm currently using the one that came with my iomega cd-burner.

I believe that 3.03 is the latest DirectCD version. (It's version numbers are lower than the companion versions of EasyCD Creator which is currently at 4.03.) Version 3.03 is working well for me on a variety of W2K machines.

Jim

Roxio (formerly the Adaptec software division) is (rumor)
prepped to release new versions of Easy CD Creator and DirectCD sometime
this year. Both will be raised to version 5 - to reflect new features and
the change in company status.

A pre-review of DCD 5 can be found here:
http://www.cdrwcentral.com/cdrsoftware/directcd5/

Also check out their review of WinOnCD 3.8, a product that Roxio (Adaptec)
picked up from the CeQuadrat buyout.

hmm...i think that cdrw is just screwed up...
cause i updated everything and it still just doesn't format it..
anyone else has this problem?

yeknomboy,

What operating system are you running on this system? Also, what concurrent processes are running when you try to use the cd writer? What is the CPU, CPU speed, bus speed, and hard drive type?

Regards,
Jim
