Gigabyte 7VRXP Via KT333 mobo, 1800XP, 512ram, lite-On x48 cd-rw.

Ive got the raid ports set to IDE in the bios and my cd-burner on the 1st raid channel which works as normal except its slow and uses all the cpu power when burning a disc. If i play an mp3 during burning the sound stutters and slows down its that bad. It will burn ok at x24 speed but anything above that and the data thru-put is interrupted constantly making the burn slower than at x24. Although it will rip a full cd at full speed without pausing taking just over 2 mins and 2-4% cpu. On the ide channel it burns at x48 no problem but for various reasons i cant put it there (2xHD masters and DVD-writer on ide1 slave and the slave connector for ide2 wont stretch to the cd writer - is there such a thing as an extension?)

Any ideas why this happens? Isnt a raid port supposed to be almost as good as the ide ports? I know its not made for cd drives but if it can pull the data off the drive at full speed why not write to it the same?
