ok, here's the deal:
4x is best. why? simple: it's faster than 1x while still being CLV and the writing algorythm is based on ROPC of the drive rather than the media identifier code. 2x is the worst speed which was basically invented by Pioneer for the -R media and later picked up by Toshiba in their early drives. It was based on the media lookup table rather than a ROPC result. It is still an oddball for the -R compatible drives but most drives included it anyway in case you have older media (btw there is no provision for 2x in the original DVD-R General spec.). So to sum up the speed breakdown goes like this in the order of best to worst (for -R)
4x, 1x, 6x-16x , 2x
That being said, always buy quality media. I've burned 1000s of discs and I've owned almost every single Pioneer drive beginning with the 103 and quite a few NEC's starting with the 1300. You will regret dearly when if you use sh1tty media. I've had literally 10s discs go bad after a couple of years of usage. I have the best luck with a multitude of players using the -R media. My favorites are Taiyo Yuden G02 and Ritek G04. Every single disc I burned using those play everywhere including my xbox and ancient DVD players like the Pioneer DV-525.
