Burning 2 different DVDs at same time

When I try to do 2 at the same time, it takes an average of 20 minutes to complete both, burning at 4x. I notice the buffer meters going down to 0%, then going back up. Nero CD/DVD speed reports get kinda bad also. Using an NEC 3450A and an NEC 3520A. Burning off of 2x 160GB Hitachi SATA II so throughput is not an issue. They are on seperate IDE channels set as master also. Firmware is up to date.

I've been meaning to find an answer to my question, why does this happen? It's not the media, not the hard drives, and not the burners. Any know for sure if moving all my rips to a dedicated RAID 0 setup will provide better results? Or is anyone having the sam problem and have figured out a solution?

Do the DVD's work?
How long does it take to burn a single DVD at 4X on your rig?

The bandwith needed for DVD burners really isnt all that high from what I recall, is the OS using the pagefile extensively durring your dual burning?
Do you have a pagefile set and if so how big?
sorry if I miss your answers.. maybe this will get the ball rolling for you. 😛

Yes the DVDs work, but high PI errors/failures. Burning a single DVD takes about 13 minutes at 4x, 9 minutes at 8x. Don't know about page file usage yet, but I'll check. The current setting for it, however, is 1536MB.

if you're burning 16x media then you want to burn @ 8x rather than 4x, the dyes are designed to be burnt faster than 4x.

You've checked you're running in DMA not PIO and you've defragged your hard drives recently of course?

Also what media are you using, cheap stuff will always give high PI errors. Also the stock firmware on the NECs is crap, head over to liggy and dee's webpage (check at cdfreaks.com) and download thier version.

Burning 2 DVDs at the same time is asking for trouble. NEC drives feature on-the-fly error correction circuit. If one drive has to slow down, then the other will suffer. Burn one DVD at a time using quality Made in Japan media at 8x.

Based on your single disc burn time, I would guess that your drive is running in DMA mode and are fully functional. I also suspect that the burn quality will improve with one disc.

Ok, I upgraded my firmware to the latest Dee's for both drives and quality has shot through the roof. I only burn 16x media at 8x. Doing 2 different DVDs at 8x takes about 17 minutes, Nero CD/DVD Speed has a quality score of 93 for the 3540 and 95 for the 3520 😀. I'm using the Office Depot 16x media -- Ritek F1s.

EDIT: Just did 2 different ones again at 8x each and it only took 13 minutes.

I now want to know how to stop the software buffer from almost emptying. The hardware buffer is fine, however. Would better burners do the trick? And what is the hype about Plextors?
