I just brought a phillips 8x for my brother courtesy of the hot deals forum.

However, there seems to be a weird problem. Whenever it turns on, the cd tray ejects. If I press the button to close it, it'll just pop back out. Same thing if I have a cdrom drive in it. Then after pressing the eject/close button a couple times, it doesn't do anything at all, like its broken. Then when I reboot the system, it'll do it again.

I had a CDrom that did this and it was a dislodged gear mechanism. I sold it to another memer for $5 shipped and he fixed it...not much help , but those were the exact symptoms...
 
That sound like the button is stuck down so that it is constantly trying to eject the disk. It might have some really depp seated problems if it does that all the time. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that sounds like a real malfunction. See if you can get the face plate off without totally destroying it and see if the button is just jammed or something.
