I know a wide variety of standalone DVD players are SVCD/VCD compatible. But I'm not sure whether this also means that they can handle CD-R media...anyone have a rough guesstimate on the percentage of these support CD-R media? I believe the one in particular I am interested in is a Panasonic, bought 3 months ago, but not sure on the exact model. What are my chances of success here?

Yah, the problem is that I don't know the model yet :(

Basically I'm gonn have a go at it, since I won't be able to see the actual machine till I get there with the hopefully working VCDs.
Just wanted to know what my chances were, heh.

I have a Pioneer DV525 (not made anymore) and a JVC XV-S300BK (BestBuy $120), both which I play VCDs and SVCDs burnt to CDR with VCDEASY encoded with TMPGenc. I do like the JVC's interface and functionality better, but then again it is newer than my poineer. I have had no problem with SVCDs up to 2520kb/s.

hope this helps some.

Almost all DVD players nowadays can read CDR media...

However not all of them can play VCDs, as it's not such a popular format here in North America.... Since you dont know the specific model of your DVD player, we cant really tell you if it will play VCDs or not...

EDIT: I just check on Panasonic's website for you... all their current DVD players supports both CDR media and VCD playback... so I would say your chances are pretty high :)

My Apex loves VCDs. Supposed to work with SVCDs, but the ones I've tried (with TMPGEnc and it's presets) didn't play worth a damn. So I just stick to straight VCD.
