Burned in image on a LCD monitor? Can it happen?

I didn't think it could until I got a replacement Dell 1800FP (the DVI went back on the first one)

I was running Prime95, and I suppose I didn't have a screen saver or powersave on for a night maybe. Now whenever the screen is on, and just a black background (ex. blank screensaver) I can barely make out a window of Prime95.

How can this happen?

I have heard that plasma tv's can suffer from a burned image quite easily so maybe lcds screens can as well. I don't know if there is any cure for it either.

Yep, LCD's will burn. Sorry.

Yep, it can happen.

Run a screen saver that exercises all of your pixels with different colors, for a couple of days straight to see if you can get rid of the image. (Flying Windows is a good one)

If this doesn't work, then you might be out of luck.

Always run a screen saver with LCD's.
If you don't, you will get a ghosted image.
Some notice it more than others, but it will happen.

Will it help to have the monitor set to turn off after a certain amount of time, or to just manually turn it off when you're going to be away from the computer for some length of time?

Wow.. I thought burn in couldn't happen on the new LCDs. I have a screen saver on after a few minutes and it goes standby after like 5 minutes. I just do it to save electricity.

I also thought burning in does not happen to the newer lcd's

we have a new LCD at work (hospital) that has static images of vital signs ekg readings.
I asked our engineer guy about the issue of burning in a pixel he said this monitor did not have that problem.

Why bother with a black screensaver, why not just use power-saving mode??

I have three large LCDs (VX900) and they have an easy touch button. Whenever I leave the area I simply touch the button and turn 'em off. Yeah - you can do that in power management automatically, but I don't trust any of that automatic stuff - I'm a control freak.

LCDs can burn too. Usually, if the power supply is under powered, the pixels have trouble twisting back to where they should go. The backlights go dim too sometimes.

Well, I didn't have this problem with my other 3 LCDs but on this replacement one it happened almost right out of the box. I've since been using the Windows XP screensaver and powermanagement and turning them off whenever I'm going to be gone for a while. The window isn't detectable anymore, but there are some lines barely detectable...not sure what they were.

It is the replacement though. I returned one because the dvi port went bad, and this is the one I got as the replacement.

I didn't know it happened after that short of time, my friend leaves his CRT running nonstop even if he's not at the computer for a few days, with no screensavor, and it doesn't have any problems.. I myself would recomend always turning off monitors when their not in use for any decent period of time..
