Burned cheese blocks traffic on I-10 in Florida after crash

ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- It was nacho ordinary traffic accident. It was an asphalt-crust cheese pizza, minus the sauce.

A nauseating smell of burned rubber and melted cheese assaulted motorists on Interstate 10 on Thursday when a semitrailer carrying more than 39,000 pounds of shredded cheese caught fire.

Both eastbound lanes of traffic on I-10 were blocked for more than six hours after the blaze broke out shortly after 2 p.m. about one mile east of the Alabama state line.

A failure of the semi's brakes is being blamed for the fire that ignited the trailer and its contents, turning the trailer into a twisted metal mass filled with bags of shredded cheese.

Damage was estimated at $30,000.

The white, five-cheese blend was headed to a Little Caesars Pizza, but Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Josh Tucker did not know which one.

The driver of the semi, Singh Jaspal, 53, of Clovis, Calif., was not injured. He was able to disconnect the cab from the trailer and escape, Tucker said.

The cheese was scooped from the interstate with a front-end loader and placed in a large metal container on the shoulder of the road.

Traffic was diverted to the shoulder to avoid gridlock. Motorists pointed and laughed as they slowly passed the charred semitrailer. Traffic remained slow moving as of 8 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the semi was not ticketed, the FHP said.
