burn-in for harddrives?

hi all,

i'm used to doing a burn-in on a new system to check the ram, cooling, stability, etc.

but is this something that can be done for harddrives too? i'll be finishing up my network file server probably tonight or tomorrow night. is there a way to do a burn-in on the drives, and if so, would this help to identify a weak drive? or do hds just fail randomly?

i want to be reasonably sure they're not going to fail right away before i start loading them up with files (raid 5 with seperate backup, but it would be a major inconvenience). 4x 400gb 7200.10 pata from the recent outpost deal.

thanks!

maybe to clarify: if i use the drives very heavily for a few days (ie, a burn-in), and one fails, is it because it was going to fail anyway and i accelerated it, or do drives usually fail randomly?

theyre ready to go out of the box.

id imagine they have already been through stress tests at the factory anyway before going into a box for sale.

nice setup you have there, i assume you are going to run raid-5?
