What I'm attempting to do:
Burn .avi file to a DVD. It is not a pirated movie.

I have .avi files that I want to burn but I'm just not sure how to do it with my new burner. I backed up some of the DVD's I already own with no problem using DVD-Shrink. Is this similar? I found out I could mount some of them in Alcohol (some were image files, not avi's).

Any advice? I have Nero and Plextor A40

Thanks in advance!

If you have Nero 6 (paid for version), then Nerovision express will do this for you.

doom9 knows all.

OT Question: Why does everyone disclaimer that they're not pirating nowadays? "I wan't to burn a mix CD from mp3s....ripped from my own CDs, I promise!", "I want to backup my movies to DVD+-R so my kids don't destroy the originals...not stealing from Blockbuster, I swear!", etc...

Are people really so afraid of the e-attacks from the anti-pirate brigade? Maybe I just don't assume evil intentions...

I would rather spend one second typing out a sentence rather than paying for it for the rest of my life.

One of the easiest that i've used is Ulead's Movie maker 3 and/or 4

I used TMPGEnc when I wanted to try that out. They offer a free version for download, or a ~20 day trial Pro version that either converts .avi to the proper dvd mpeg2 format.

I like to use TMPGEnc's DVD Author software to author dvd's before burning them. If you're cheap, they offer a ~20 day trial version on that software as well.

I second that. just click on the media you want to add to the dvd and burn. of course you can add menus very easy as well.

don't use Nero Smart Start, go into the actual Nero Burning Rom, select DVD-Video drag the encoded file into the video_ts folder on the left hand side, it will scan the file to make sure it's dvd complient. hit burn, your pirat...por.... I mean movie will be burnt :)

if you have a bundled Nero that only has Smart Start, it should be easier I just never have used that sorry...

Lots of opinions on different software here. There's no one app that most think does the best job, easily?

urgh...

1) download VSO Divx to DVD, like someone else said... totally foolproof. Then

2) take TMPGEnc DVD author, and make a nice menu for the resulting files, along with chapters and whetevere else you need.

3) Burn the end product with Nero.
