Please tell your wife that if she sees an open door,(that's not suppose to be), or a broken window she should stay out until escorted. My wife walked in on a couple of thieves in our house, but thankfully they just ran. Fingerprints???? we were lucky the cops even took a report, 4 hours later.

Very true. Everybody should have this talk with their wife/kids.

She knows better. She didn't go in until a (male) neighbor went in with her.

Her father is a retired detective.

Thats why I have a big ass mean dog.

didnt stop meth heads from breaking into my dads house. he had 2 100lb dobies at the time, they had free roam of the house and garage. the crooks baited them into the back yard and closed a door to the house so they couldnt get back in. still the dumbasses took stupid shit, never finding the good stuff. they took some movie prop guns my dad collected, along with a bunch of magazines for guns they never found. the only ones he really couldnt replace were 2 50rd mags for a NATO CAR 9mm full auto he had hidden better than they were looking. he found both at a pawn shop 3 miles from his house, got them back after a bit of persuasion.

i grew up in a crappy part of phoenix, so ive been robbed many times over. gets old. i have a big dog as well, and a bunch of really good hiding places for stuff i just cant bear to be stolen.

That happened to my mom as well

That was a traumatic event (I was 8 maybe?)

They took all kinds of things, a lot of my mom's jewelry, most notably her engagement ring and some necklaces her cousin (who has since passed) got her from Vietnam. My dad had his coin and bill collection stolen. They took a lot. Hell, they even took $5 from my wallet. The guy who did it was caught, but the stuff was never recovered. I hate thieves.

So my wife gets home today to find our back door wide open. Her first thought was OMG the cats!

Fortunately they were all there. I was about twenty minutes away and she'd dialed 911 immediately. They arrived about 30 min after the call.

The amazing part is that though the place was ransacked, they only took two things. The XBOX 360 and my wife's (older) digicam. It's amazing what they didn't take. They busted the hell out of the doorjam though.

My assumption is that they saw the 32" LCD TV (through the window) and were hoping to grab that. I have it mounted on a wall that is about 1/2" plaster and brick behind it. They removed a couple of nuts but it was pretty secure. The mount still won't budge.

So the police came, we filed a report and they dusted for fingerprints (no joy).

It had to be local wannabe thugs (spring break). I'll be working from home tomorrow.

Actually got to see a CSI in action, that was about the only positive. And it made me grateful for what we have.

Well, how else are they going to take pics of the xbox that they're going to sell on craigslist?

But seriously, sorry to hear that. We got hit too when I was still living with my parents. Came through my window that I left a crack open to. Took a bunch of my stuff cause they were just lying around but thankfully they didn't get any stuff my parent's hid.

If they only took 2 things, you must live in the ghetto. So you gonna get better locks now?

Firstly, it's not the ghetto, but it's near the ghetto (lots of rehab going on now, the thugs are slowly moving away).

As far as better locks, it's up to the landlord. For now we have a doorstop, the kind that fits under the doorknob. The "handyman" is coming back Saturday to replace a large section of the doorjam. The house is over 100 years old and it was rehabbed in '58. So replacing the entire doorjam would be quite a chore.

I'm going to discuss things with the landlord and see what we can agree to.

Can u suggest a better lock than a deadbolt? The handyman said that's about as good as they get.

I live next door to gang central and regularly leave tools and camping gear in the back yard and have never been "burgled."

Still, why is your LCD visible from outside your house?

Windows in my "office". I have mini-blinds but on nice days I open them.

Which is why I'm convinced it's someone within 3-4 blocks.

Just some punk kids looking to smash and grab.

Sorry to hear that.
My friends apartment was busted into in Greenwich Village a few weeks ago. The building code doesn't mandate locks on the windows, so he doesn't have any. Took his PS3, 360, Wii, PSP, Laptop, threw it all in a military style duffle he had in his room and took off.

It's so sad about the economy and more and more crime. I wonder what national statistics look like. I just had my house broken into/belongings stolen about a month ago.
