Burgled today

So my wife gets home today to find our back door wide open. Her first thought was OMG the cats!

Fortunately they were all there. I was about twenty minutes away and she'd dialed 911 immediately. They arrived about 30 min after the call.

The amazing part is that though the place was ransacked, they only took two things. The XBOX 360 and my wife's (older) digicam. It's amazing what they didn't take. They busted the hell out of the doorjam though.

My assumption is that they saw the 32" LCD TV (through the window) and were hoping to grab that. I have it mounted on a wall that is about 1/2" plaster and brick behind it. They removed a couple of nuts but it was pretty secure. The mount still won't budge.

So the police came, we filed a report and they dusted for fingerprints (no joy).

It had to be local wannabe thugs (spring break). I'll be working from home tomorrow.

Actually got to see a CSI in action, that was about the only positive. And it made me grateful for what we have.

Well I've had my car broken into twice, then stolen (POS Buick), but never had someone in my home.

It's creepy. I feel dirty.

edit: In regards to insurance, we rent and meant to get renter's insurance, and just kept putting it off. But frankly, the premium would cost near (or more) the value of what was taken. I'm calling to get it added to our policy tomorrow.

2nd thread to use "burgled" in as many days.

sorry to hear, but the word does make me laugh.

I've had my car broken into 3 times over 12 or so years. (2x in high school and once many years later)
A friend of mine had thugs armed with AKs bust into his house, tie up him and his roommates, rob them, and take off. That's about it it in my burgle-ee experience.

Had my home burgled once. We were insured so no big deal but it was heartbreaking to see my mum crying her eyes out over some jewelery that her mum (my grandma, now dead) gave her.

Been there done that. Twice in fact.

They don't tell you that fingerprint dust cannot be removed. Once it's on there, it's pretty much there for good.

The majority of break-ins of this nature are done to steal easily carried items that can be fenced or pawned to get money for drugs. They get pennies on the dollar for your possessions, so they stay quite busy stealing to support their habits.

I now have a monitored alarm, stickers on the doors and a fake camera by the front door. BTW, it costs me $120 a year for the monitoring and it saves me $180 a year on my homeowners.

Before our last move I sold a TV that the meth head that lived next to use tried to steal. Of course it was a 36" sony crt television and he could not lift it. but the podunk police didn't come out to dust for prints until 5 days later... by then they were too messed up to be used.

After 5 years it still had dust residue on it.

Someone stole an issue of Nintendo Power out of my classroom desk back when I was in 5th grade. I still vow vengeance onto that person.

We also have a cat, but it's not clear how he would help in the situation...

If I could afford to live in a better area I would, hence the dog.

Please tell your wife that if she sees an open door,(that's not suppose to be), or a broken window she should stay out until escorted. My wife walked in on a couple of thieves in our house, but thankfully they just ran. Fingerprints???? we were lucky the cops even took a report, 4 hours later.

Very true. Everybody should have this talk with their wife/kids.

I've had several car breakins over the years, kids stealing stereo's, etc, but never my home. Not sure if that would just piss me off or give me the creeps and make me want to move ... or start mounting machine guns :)

Given the demographic of our 'men' here, they should wait to be escorted too.
