Apparently, someone I know's house got robbed, and the thief actually stayed there for a couple of days because he knew nobody would be back (it was over the summer holidays).

LOL! This sounds like a deleted scene on the Badder Santa DVD where Billy Bob steals a car and finds it's owners address in the glove compartment. He goes to the house and just chills in there for hours pretty much, knocking paintings down, eating, crapping (he even clogs the toilet:laugh.
