Anyone feel more obligated to give to a bum that asks for money right after you park your car during the night, for fear that they may "retaliate" your prized posession?

I make it a point to never give money to bums unless they are doing something of entertainment value, like standing on the streetcorner playing an instrument. If I have coins in my pocket I might give in this situation though just to not get harassed in the parking lot.

no i never give. i used to when i was younger, but once i started working, and i realized that some of these people go as far as to drag their kids along using lines like

'we ran out of gas, lost my wallet, just got back from disneyland, trying to make it home', and the same scammer tried to ask me on two different occasions in the same parking lot, i was pretty pissed.

however, i am partial to bums holding signs that say 'need money for beer.'

I made it my policy a long time ago never to give cash handouts to any panhandlers. Makes it a lot simpler.

My policy too. Usually roll up my windows and make sure my doors are locked when I encounter them.

If someone asks me for money I usually give it to them if I have some change in my pocket or a single.

Lately I've been getting a lot of BS stories like that too - i need gas, money for a train ticket, transmission oil, etc.

I don't give them any money, but if it's some guy that's not specifically asking for money, I'll give them food if I have a granola bar or something in the car.

"Do you have any spare change?" "Absolutely. You can pick it up at <insert some kind of charitable location>."

I never give out money on the street. During the summer, when I worked in Baltimore, I had to "commute" two blocks from my apartment. Every day, in that short amount of time, I would no doubt be approached by at least one bum asking for money. I would even be approached by the same individuals on a daily basis.

On the other hand, I often give money to charitable organizations and support groups. I feel there is a better chance of accomplishing some good through these organizations than a random bum on the street.

When I was taking the train from downtown Chicago back into the Northern Suburbs, there was this one guy who always hung out a block from the train station, always at the same corner. He looked and sounded a LOT like Bernie Mac, strangely enough...Anyway, he was fairly well-dressed; always had a nice furry hat on, leather gloves, slacks, some sort of decent jacket, looked clean and whatnot. But at least once every @#$!ing week that I walked by him, he would run over to me as if in a frenzy and ask for the difference between the money he had (random amounts) and how much it would cost for him to "get back to Waukegan...just left my wallet at home and I gotta get on the train as soon as I can to get home to my family..."

Finally I said, "Still? Man, you've been trying to get home for at least the past 2 fvcking months."

He acted confused and started blabbering something about how I "must be thinking of someone else, I work in the city and just forgot my wallet today, and man, I never do that, I was just in a hurry..."

He avoided me after that. *shrug*

The best situation I had was when I came out of the grocery store, got into my car to leave. Guy comes up from behind me and taps on my window, I am having an absolutely horrid day which I chose to take out on him, I gave him the bird and drove off. Fairly satisfying actually. I have very little respect for the peddlers around here, you should never give them money, if you feel charitable then get them some lunch or a little care package. Giving the homeless money is a bad idea, do not do it!!

just my $.02
