Just got my hands on a P4-1.5GHz... thinking to self.... "Self... NOW we're going to get BGod! heh heh heh..."

.. loaded up RC5 (v2.8015-469-GTR-01051421) ... and, well, you know...

IT SUCKS!

It's performing worse than my P3-1GHz is.... averaging about 2 mKeys/sec whereas my P3 is doing 2.6 and that's while I'm doing what I supposed to be doing for work... :(

Geoffs, try the latest pre-release client, they have a slightly faster RC5 core for the P4 in it. Other than that though, you're right; the P4 is simply slow at doing the work nessisary for RC5.

A project that the P4 is good at is Distributed Folding and TA has a team:

Distributed Folding #40 - this project may start to slip now that TACO has re-deployed + there is a now a way to run the client 2x as fast

Another project is GIMPS (searching for prime numbers). I don't know if TA has a team or not.

Yeah P4s suck at RC5. Maybe you could do a processor swap with someone, you run Seti for them, they run RC5 for you. You both benifit :)

Yes, please trade processors with someone. P4s are pathetic at RC5, and pretty much a waste of time.

May I suggest that you star a new thread (or edit the title of this one) offering a P4 vs Athlon trade on a MHz (or PR rating) swap with someone in SETI or Distributed Folding. Both of you will be ahead. Your P4 will shine in those two projects, and their RC5 output (for you) will be much higher than what you are getting.

I will definately keep that suggestion in mind. I'm not sure if I am keeping the box yet or not. It's a long story, but here goes... The box in question is a Compaq Presario 7000 P4-1.5g w/384 PC-800 rimms, etc, and belongs to a colleague at work. She was getting fed up of how it kept locking up and running really slowly, so, instead of having someone look at it, she goes out and buys an HP 1.8GHz Athlon box (she's not hurting for money). I offer to look at it for her and appraise it, and possible buy it from her. I take out the hd and put that in her HP so she can copy her important documents. I drop in a blank hd and load up Win2K Pro (replacing the WinME Home edition that was on there). Lo-and-behold, the machine is working fine. I put her hd back in there, and there is soooooooo much crap loading up that it's no wonder the thing is dying. Well, I have to put a reasonable price tag on this PC and make her an offer... she's so disenchanted with it, I could probably get her to pay me to take it! ;)

So, if I do keep the box, it may very well become my foot in the door for the project that I will eventually move all my machines over to! :D
