Bummer, no Netflix on WMC after 9/15

Opened Windows Media Center to watch some shows after work, and got the following pop-up (which I couldn't screen cap):

"As of September 15, 2015, Netflix will no longer be available on Windows Media Center. Please visit devices.netflix.com to see the many devices that support Netflix today."

FU world 😡

Yeah, I ended up swapping out my HTPCs for Rokus when Hulu Desktop App stopped working on WMC. I knew it was only a matter of time before other things went kaput.

The netflix metro app is trash. For some reason they decided it was wise not to support remote controls. WMC netflix was the only way to have proper remote support in netflix.

I have multiple HTPC's, and with them discontinuing WMC in 10, it has caused issues because it is the only software you can use to watch cable. Thankfully silicondust is making their own DVR software and it should be out in October.

Unless I've missed some recent news, upgrading to Windows 10 means no more WMC period as Win10 doesn't support it at all.

Correct. All my home gear is running on Windows 10, but I still keep a Windows 7 virtual machine in my environment because my Television still works on Charter -> Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH -> Windows Media Center -> Windows Media Extenders throughout the house.

It's not the most perfect set-up in the world, but being able to have 6 tuners to record and watch whatever I want, and access it on whichever televisions I want has its appeal.

How do you get passed the digital cable advisor check in a virtual machine? My VM wouldn't run it because of HDCP issues.

I know you have a ceton, but you might check out the HDhomerun prime once they get their new DVR software out. They are going to put it directly into Kodi (XBMC) and Plex.

I just bought TiVo gear to finally put my WMC setup out to pasture.

As soon as Microsoft gets this Xbox 360 backward compatibility shit going in the mainstream, I'll get rid of an Xbox 360 or two that I was using as media extenders as well.

Good by MCE, it was a good run. You were ahead of your time and no one really gave a shit. If Apple had developed you, you'd have been amazing...

I'm thinking of doing the same thing re: WMC-> TiVo switch. How happy are you with the change? Did you go with the Roamio or the Roamio Plus?

I can't understand why they would stop Netflix on WMC. Not like it cost anything to keep it working on a program that is no longer updated or changed.

I can't stand their new website, and would much prefer to use WMC. Maybe I'll finally break down and get a Roku 2 for $60.

Just used Netflix with Firefox, why is that not an option? 😕

Meh, it is probably what I will have to do, but Windows Media Center works flawlessly with my RF remote, and I have never been able to get it to work to control the playback functions in a browser.

There is a little commandlet called DCA Override that will get past that annoyance 🙂

Access your VM via Console (since WMC doesn't work over RDP), and download DCA to it. Run it, and let it fail. Close out WMC, then run the .cmd file as an Administrator, and it should very quickly succeed. Open WMC back up and run DCA again and it should near instantly pass. Now you're good to go! 🙂

Exactly. I like Tivo but I don't want to pay for it. WMC works really well for our use.

Where else can you get a DVR and Netflix?? Seriously, I'm asking Right now I have a DVR and Netflix on WMC and it's been ... okay. . I have Roku, but it isn't a DVR, I don't want to go back and forth, not to mention the streaming quality on Roku isn't very good. I have and Xbox 360 on another TV but it doesn't have a DVR.
I am NOT getting cable or a dish, that is out of the question.
I feel like we have been majorly screwed by Microsoft for no apparent reason at all. UGH!

For Netflix and such lot of game consoles have it. Use that as an excuse to get a Wii U or something. 😛 I heard it works in Linux now too but probably takes lot of hacking to get it working.

I don't trust MS for anything that I want to depend on for day to day use, they love to introduce something that lot of people start using, then stop supporting it or remove it entirely. Look at Windows Home Server. So glad I never jumped that bandwagon and sticked to Linux.

If you just want Netflix you can get a Roku or FireTV streaming stick for around $30.

Yeah there are solutions, but I don't really need new hardware. I have two monitors, speakers, a hard drive. I don't see why Microsoft had to deprecate media center. It's a good tool to have as part of the OS. On the other hand, virtually all of their customers in the future will be cube farms, and corporations neither need nor even allow it to be installed.

You could give Kodi a shot.

This sucks. I switched to WMC computers about 18 months ago so that I didn't have to switch to different devices for streaming my local media and Netflix. Now WMC Netfix is going away and WMC is becoming more or less extinct with the onslaught of Win 10. I had 3 tivos with lifetime and I sold them all, so I can't see myself going back to Tivo. Too much of an investment to go back.

I'm just hoping that Netflix or some 3rd party will come up with a good remote capable Netflix app for Win 10, and that Silicon Dust DVR software will come out quickly and work as advertised. If I have those and Kodi, I should be able to keep things running nicely. Unfortunately, I expect many months of browser viewing, which the kids will hate.
