I posted this elsewhere, but its notable enough that I feel it deserves it own thread. Theres a lot of questions and discussions (And has been for decades, all across the world) about what the "best" caliber is for any given situation. What would you use for a CCW pistol? What weapon for breeching? What weapon for urban settings, What weapon for this, what weapon for that.
The fact of the matter is at the end of the day there is no man portable civilian legal Death Ray. Nothing is a sure thing. Its possible to drastically increase your odds by using quality gear but some people just dont want to die.
When shopping for a weapon, for whatever purpose you intend, in my mind its far more important to have something thats comfortable to you and is affordable to shoot so you can practice.
I personally use a 9mm due to cheap ammo which allows me more practice. It has a higher capacity which allows me to carry more ammunition. Less recoil means on target faster.
Some prefer the .45. Larger caliber for more pepper to get the job done.
But ultimately it comes down to the user. Heres an article that should hopefully drive home the point that sometimes, no matter what you use or how well you place your shots, people just dont want to die.

Remarkably, Palmer had taken 22 hits from Soulis' .40-caliber Glock, 17 of which had hit center mass. Despite the fact that the weapon had been loaded with Ranger SXTs?considered by many to be one of the best man-stoppers available?Palmer lived for more than four minutes after the last shot was fired. His autopsy revealed nothing more than a small amount of alcohol in his bloodstream.
