Bulletin Boards of the Past

first off, to get to the bbs, you:

telnet citynight.com

alittle background info. this bbs has been around along time.. since the early 90's if i recall.. used to be busy with callers. it had 8 low speed (2400kbps) and 1 high speed (14.4kbps) back then and was always a challenge to get online.. has a nice teleconference feature like mirc chat channels.

anyways, with the advent of the internet, bob (the sysop) decided to port his bbs software over to linux and put the bbs on the net. but along with that, he decided to get rid of the phone lines as well. that really cut down on traffic since alot of people weren't aware of it's internet presence. as of now, it's lucky to get a few hits a day..

so just check it out or something.. 🙂 thanks!

edit: nevermind... sysop said too many weirdos.. but check below.. found a nice site that lists an alphabatized list of telnet bulletin boards of the past... running wildcat, telegard, renegade, wwiv, etc... 🙂

you can also get some info on the bbs at www.citynight.com

Cool. I remember using BBS's way back before I got internet. The stuff I got with good ol' Zmodem and later HS/Link 🙂.

doh! that sucks. sorry. lemme find out why guest is not allowed right now.. 😀

edit: sorry again guys.. i barely frequent that place. once in awhile.. but thought for sure since it doesnt get much traffic that the guest user account would be on.. 😛 my bad. i shot a message over to the bob to see what was up with the guest user account for new users.. 😀

ill keep ya guys informed. thanks for trying though!

edit2: gopunk, i think that's the old configuration when it was still using the modems. i believe he's running on an athlon now.. but those specs arent too off from when it was booming up til 1996 or so..

BBS were great back in the day. I think thats how I got the original Doom. We even had a BBS up in Northern Colorado that had online gaming. You dialed into one of 10 lines and for $20/month you could play online multiplayer for Doom2, Warcraft2, and Duke3D. Absolutely no lag over 28.8k connections...it was great. We even had a few get togethers and lan parties when QTest came out. *sigh* I miss those days.

Try new for username or something like that. A lot of them used to be that way (if it works there will be no password prompt).

i must agree. i miss those days as well.. we're just one needle in a haystack on the web.. bbs on the other hand were local and small enough to get to know people.. and in some instances meet them..

oh, i guess i should change the thread title until it gets fixed.. 😛

OK let us know when we can get on. Does this BBS have BRE or SRE? Because if so myself and N8magic will see that bob gets the traffic he used to love!

ack! nevermind.. should have checked the guest access before posting this...

seems like a no go.. i guess he had a few weirdos logging on to the bulletin board.. basically told me that there were one too many strange people on the internet and that it wont be turned on in the near future..

that's gotta suck.

BRE/SRE? that's the multiplayer space (star trek) type game right that was text based? that was a addicting game... hmm..

i think i finally found a purpose.. to find a bbs that still runs that game. the bbs that i mentioned didnt have that since it was a home grown...

wow. found this webpage that lists whole bunch of telnet bbs's running stuff from renegade, telegard, wildcat, etc...

check it out.. Telnet BBS Guide 🙂

n/m. the multiplayer game i was thinking of was Tradewars.. but i played SRE/BRE before.. just dont remember it.. 😛

lol! if you dont mind slow arse telnet connection... it felt like 2400bps.. 😛

telnet to:

villagebbs.dhs.org (running on WWIV).. <--- that was the first software i used when i ran one.. switched over to telegard later on..

they have SRE and Tradewars 2002

after playing a 1 turn of SRE, i remember it. that was a cool game.. even with all these cool 3d games now adays, those turn based games are just as fun as ever.. if only that place had a better connection.. need to look alittle more for a faster site..

never heard of that.. what's it about?

i remember playing tradewars the most, but sre/bre was a close second.

I still play on BBSes..

funkingonuts.dyndns.org

dreamvision.dyndns.org

abcbbs.dns2go.com

Those are the BBSes I know of off the top of my head right now.... Dreamvision is the more active one.. most people logon to BBSes now just to do one thing; play MajorMUD. 🙂

I connected to my first BBS on my commodore 64 in 1984!

I had the 300 baud MANUAL vicmodem.....300 BAUD people - you could see the ascii text letters scroll horizontally accross the screen!!!!!!!!
The modem had no autodial capabilities - I had to dial the phone number (on my parent's ROTARY phone no less), listen for the carrier signal to blast in my ear, then unplug the modular jack from the handset and shove it in the modem. Hit ENTER a few times to get the handshake and I was in 300 baud BBS heaven!

I also go to help run a BBS out of my high school back in 1986 - it was on a PC XT with 640KB of RAM and a 20MB hard drive (we thought we RULED with that much RAM and that GIGANTIC 20 MEGABYTE hard disk LOL) running DOUBLEDOS for two nodes with two 1200 baud modems. We won a state educational award and got to go to Albany and meet Assemblymen and get certificates - it was fun!

Man..........have we come a LOOOOOOONG way since then!

LOTRD was a BBS role-playing game. You went out, fought monsters, got money, bought stuff, talked to people, fought them, etc. Basically like Everquest and such except it was all text-based. I'm surpised you never heard of it. At least 50% of the local BBS's had it around here (at BBS peak I had about 40-50 of them local).
