As an admin I feel like you should be sanctioned for having just called out at least 25-50% of the entire active membership here as being BS'ers...however, as a member who likes to tell everyone I make at least 6 figures, have both a hot wife and a hot girlfriend (not too mention the hot girlfriend that my hot wife has ), and that I do happen to drive nothing less than a Porsche (this being Friday means I am driving my Friday Porsche, of course, having one for every day of the week), I find myself sidelined and left with the ability to say no more than "touché, good sir, touché!"

lol i'm not sure if that guy is actually serious or joking.

If not jealously is a terrible thing.

There will always be someone better looking, makes more money, has a better job. Has a bigger d*** than you live your life and don't worry about other people you will enjoy the short time you are on this planet alot more.

O and IDC do you think wife can send that hot girlfriend my way I need a back rub lol.

Well, I haven't installed it yet. I don't want to install if there isn't a hotfix.
Ironically, that would be the best way for you to find out, given the circumstances. It won't take more than 2 hours, tops. The hotfix may work, so it is worth the gamble, imo.

It's free now but at some point I'll have to pay for it so I'd rather not have to install Windows 8 now and then later on go back to Vista. Money is an issue. :) I'm sure many of you can relate.
Just try. Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation.

Yes seriously, unless someone gave him the CPU there is no doubt he could have bought one cheaper and likely scored himself the same level of "snappy" performance in Vista.

Why would anyone pair a bulldozer with Vista and claim poverty is their reasoning for doing so? If you are impoverished then bulldozer was a silly choice, you paid more for it upfront than buying a last-gen processor and you are going to pay more to keep it running versus the expense of a last gen processor.

When you claim dollars matter, your purchasing decisions should reflect as much. Buying bulldozer is an action that does not reflect "dollars matter". Buying a PhII or a Q9550 reflects a "dollars matter" mentality.

That's not the part I was questioning- I'd agree that a Phenom II would be the better perf/$ purchase. The part I was arguing with was you claiming that the extra running costs of a Bulldozer would be enough to force him to live outside of his means. :\

You just assume that he would be running it 24/7. Maybe he won't and therefore, the power bill won't be as meaningful. These watts only matter on a bigger scale, say, you run a data center or something. I am pretty sure, those $20 overhead is negligible for the OP in the grand scheme of things. Just chill guys :)

Fortunately for you my finances aren't your concern and I really don't have to justify what I buy to anyone. I've been a linux user for a long time and haven't had to worry about overpaying Microsoft for their bloatware. For reasons I won't go into I've decided to go back to Windows for a time but I don't have a copy of Windows 7. Plain and simple. As for my choice of processors, it's a huge step up from what I had. I'm not running my own website testing out all the latest hardware and benchmarks. I'm an average joe who needs a computer and got an inexpensive CPU that met my needs.
By posting details of your hardware and software setup, you've invited yourself to criticism. Don't like it? Don't come to a public forum then. There are very few logically-sound reasons to purchase an FX processor right now. It is extremely unlikely that, given your apparent financial situation, Bulldozer was a good choice.

Vista isn't officially supported, but there's nothing stopping you from trying. The installer may attempt an OS detection and block installation on non-supported OS(es), though. As others have mentioned, the difference isn't great, so you're not losing out a lot.

How do people still hate on Windows Vista like this? The biggest issue with it was driver support upon release. That wasn't Microsoft's fault in any capacity. As of now, it should run near-identically to Windows 7 on any given PC. One of the biggest drawbacks to it is lack of TRIM.

Even if the patch doesn't work on Vista, it isn't worth worrying about. The patch doesn't "fix" Bulldozer performance, it just alters the order in which Windows assigns tasks to CPUs. It works on any CPU with HT, too; physical cores are loaded first. Once they've all been loaded, logical cores get loaded. In the case of Bulldozer, that means one core from each module will load, and only when more threads are used will it use the second core on a module.

I used Vista for years and then went to Win7 only because I bought a 7970 right after its release only to find AMD didn't have a driver for Vista. :/ So, I went Win7 so I could use my new shiney toy and feel that instant gratification I was seeking. :)

Vista was as every bit as good as Win7, for me. I never had a problem with Vista. I would probably still be using it if AMD would have had a Vista driver early on.

Vista was fine if you had the proper hardware to run it. The problem is, most computers running Vista didn't.

My 3.5 year old desktop is running Vista, and I have a new laptop running 7. I agree with what SlowSpyder just said, I am no less productive using Vista than 7, and, with the exception of TRIM , I don't need or feel the need for the other extra features of 7.

Does making dumb posts come naturally to you or did you get help with this one? I don't see how he invited criticizm of his financial situation at all. Administrator or not the situation IDC pointed out is ludicrous, as has been mentioned by more than one member already.

For actual day to day computing you won't have any issues with an FX processor and Windows Vista.

Yes, it can be argued that there are better combinations out there but that does not magically make the OP's combination deficient in some meaningful way.

OP asked a question not for a useless critique of finances. When I post a question or comment I hope I get constructive advice or cricticism not personal attacks. Other than general comments about budgeting in choosing parts I hope never to make a response devolve to a personal level. Besides it is not my business to attack someone on their choices/finances but maybe expand their knowlege base.

Does it come natural to you? You completely missed the point of my post. It had absolutely nothing to do with his finances.

What did you expect? I once started a thread about a 2600K, and it turned into people bitching about bulldozer. When I told them to just stick to the topic at hand everyone unanimously called me a troll, i was infracted twice, and they asked me what I had expected. This whole site is full of assholes, you just have to deal with it.

The criticisms regarding his purchase were derived from his financial well being. Public forum or not that's not what the OP asked for or deserved. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should.

Any attacks on the OP's financial situation were done in jest, and very obviously so. Anyone that believes otherwise is spectacularly illiterate.

It wouldn't matter what his financial situation was, really. Bulldozer is garbage in every price segment. But especially on a budget, there are much better offerings from both Intel and AMD itself. That is what IDC (most notably) was saying.

Public forum or not that's not what the OP asked for or deserved. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should.
I neither said that nor implied that. Take that straw man and shove it up your rear.

It's just that the OP came in here, had his question answered gracefully, and got extremely defensive for absolutely no good reason. I was calling out his absurd overreaction.

You're being an argumentative jerk for the sake of it, Homeles. It needs to stop

Nice example of classic douchebaggery and pot calling the kettle black. You answered my question adequately enough. Dumb posts do come naturally to you.

Don't get upset with me though. After all, you DID post on a public forum and opened yourself up to criticism.

This isn't how we respond to other people, regardless of who started it

Your post is absolutely dripping in hypocrisy.

Since you apparently lack the capability to figure this out on your own, the OP was given advice and threw an ungrateful tantrum. You on the other hand have intentionally thrown insults, and have somehow built up some sort of expectation that defending myself is somehow the same situation.

Yes, my posts are subject to criticism. However, when the critic lacks the reading comprehension to understand them, it looks bad on the critic — not the author.

Annnnnnnnnnnyway, back to the original topic.

Anandtech's review of the performance gains from the hotfix:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5448/the-bulldozer-scheduling-patch-tested/3
Summary: Hardly worth considering.

Tomshardware's review of the performance gains from both hotfixes and UEFI updates:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-7-hotfix-bulldozer-performance,3119-3.html
Summary: Hardly worth considering. The most significant gain was a 5 second improvement in a 3dxmax rendering.

If someone has a better, more up-to-date review of the performance gains from the hotfixes, I'd like to read it.

My advice to the OP is definitely don't bother trying to hack those hotfixes to work on Vista, because for all the pain you'll likely have to endure over it, you'll hardly gain a thing. On the other hand if you just like messing around with Windows and achieving things for the sheer hell of it, I'd like to know how you get on :)

mikeymikec is right on the money. Not only will the fix not work on Vista because it contains an updated Windows 7 kernel, but the performance difference isn't worth losing any sleep over. BD will be good enough with stock Vista.:)
