My wife has been getting us more and more organic, and it's a bit of a strain on the 'ol wallet. The really sucky part is that we both love beef. We have a local supplier of organic chicken through a co-op, however I don't think they do beef. And frankly, I'm getting sick of chicken from eating it over the last month.

With the local grocers prices, there's no way I could feed my family, so I've been looking into "bulk". There's a few places online that I've seen (nothing local yet) that have some decent prices for a variety of cuts. I was wondering if any of you guys/gals shop anywhere in particular for organic beef, preferably in bulk.

It has always seemed to me that the only way (or at least the best way) you can get beef at a discount is if you buy the whole butchered cow.

I can only assume the same is true for organic beef.

then don't waste your money on that crap if you can't pay the "green" premium

organic and all that crap is only for the elite rich, you must not be elite/rich , so eat normal food like all the normal people

Looking for maybe 20 pounds mixed, probably like 7-10 ground and the rest steaks and roasts.

And FoBoT - a couple of the online shops I've found have organic grass-fed ... for example, a 36lb mix, with shipping it comes out to less than $1.00/lb. That's cheaper than the NON-organic meats at the local grocery store. So no, it's not for the elite rich. I've been getting organic free-range boneless chicken breasts for about $1.50/lb. You try to do that at a grocery store. It's when you go all out and get every single thing organic that it becomes expensive. I constantly am at odds with my wife about that, and she does the best she can to get only what she has to in organic.

Ask around at the co-op. There are also various organic websites that list all the producers in each area.

btw, "bulk" for beef is at least 1/4 of the animal.

Link to to the $1.00-$1.50/lb meat?

I guess that living near a rural area has its advantages.
I have family and friends that raise black angus, so when they need meat, its just a trip out to the field with the rifle .
They raise them so they know they are turly organic.

I know some people might have trouble going out to the field and picking out the cow that you want to eat, then shooting it, but if you grew up around it, its really no big deal.

They slaughter around here about three times a year and freeze the meat.

Hogs are done the same way here.

Haven't bought grocery store meat in a long time.

The beef that I'm looking at is http://www.geneseevalleyorganicbeef.com/. You'll shit a brick when you see shipping charges, but if you're local I'm sure it will be cheaper. Keep in mind that WITH shipping it's still around $1.00/lb. The organic chicken we buy is from a local co-op, so no website there.

Extra Value Package - Large. Approximately 36lbs, $219.95. Add in shipping (for me to NY it's about $140), comes to just about $1.00/lb.

I always have thought about that. If organic is "better," and everyone should use it, why the hell is it 5x the price of normal stuff?

Its all in the marketing.
My friends that raise cows say its actually cheaper to raise them organic than it is to use the shots and steroids. Those cost lots of extra money that the farmer has to pay for up front with the return , hopefully later, when they get more money for the cattle because of the added weight. Vet doctor fees,+++$

Its cheaper to just put the cows in the fields, let them eat the grass thats there and the hay that the farmer grew himself.

Still, we do get our chicken locally for $1.76/lb, organic. We're still looking for a local organic beef farm, pretty sure there's one about 20 miles away. We'll see how much they are.

$1/lb would be $36 total...

I wouldn't worry so much about the title "organic." Just see if you can make some connections with a local cattle producer. Best time of year to get really good beef is around August when the 4-H kids auction off their cattle that they raised as special projects. They produce some incredibly good tasting beef.

"Organic" is just at one end of the spectrum; feeding cows ground up other animals, hormones, antibiotics, and the cheapest feed possible is at the other end. There's a lot of middle ground between them.
