Yes ALL DLP/LCD Projections have lamps like that....

From manufacturer PDFs...

Panasonic
100 W HID (High Intensity Discharge)
Lamp (recommended replacement
period approximately 10,000 hours)

Samsung
DLP TV by Samsung?s lamp has a lifespan of approximately 5,000 hours,
depending on use. Since the lifespan of the lamp is virtually flat, you won?t
notice any degradation in the picture as the lamp ages. Eventually, the lamp
will die and need to be replaced.
This simple operation can be done by you, but some people may choose to have
a technician perform the service. For information on technicians and to purchase
a new lamp, call 1-800-SAMSUNG or visit samsungparts.com. The lamp costs
approximately $250 (plus tax, shipping and handling).
DLP TV by Samsung is covered by a one-year parts and labor warranty, that also
covers the lamp. If you choose to purchase an extended warranty from your retailer,
ask if it covers lamp replacement and the cost of a technician.

Panasonic is overrating theirs IMO, some manufacturers dont give you a life, but their all in this range.

Next time do more research, maybe even the sales guy questions. Your only real choice is a CRT, or a LCD (Non-Projection) for what your looking for. All Microdisplays will have a lamp (LCD, LCoS, DLP), Plasma's will lose brightness over time.

I love when the television is on,always. Not watching it 16 hours a dauy, but love to have it on

kill yourself now, it's the only solution

Yes the OP is an idiot for being pissed off because he has to replace the bulb after it burns out but theres nothing wrong with wanting the TV on.

Now if he keeps the TV just to watch the Super Bowl, I'll be happy when the store charges him a restocking fee.

A Google search reveals no such absurd notion that the bulb life is supposed to be 80K hours.

You didn't get screwed, you just weren?t properly educated about what you were purchasing.

P.S. Turn you damn TV off when you aren't watching it.

Actually, what you found was a typo on 1 page. The original page you linked says 80k hours.(edit: I think we can give them a break for one typo of an extra zero, although they should have caught it)

Plasma vs DLP guide you linked

If you dig around their website a little bit instead of just looking at 1 part, you'll notice that on the next section it shows 8k hours max life:

LCD vs DLP guide on the same section of the site

It also links to several pages for more info in that article all of which give ~8k hours as a lifespan. Additionally, the second link that you showed specifically states that the life of the entire set is estimated at 75k hours or more, they specifically do not mention the bulb...here:

Scinet Article you linked

If you then use your wonderful Scinet to search for DLP bulb, it comes up with Diseny land and Democratic Labor party...I think you might want to rethink using that place again. If we use a real engine like google and do a search for "DLP bulb life" We get this at the first link:

plasma.com!!!!

Which states 6-8k hours.(and a whole slew of links after that that also show anywhere from 1k to 8k bulb lifes) So here in two mintues I found several sites including those you linked to that show you did nothing more than a perfunctory search and are now pissed that you got burned.

In conclusion, grow up, learn from the mistake, and don't return the TV because you are an idiot.

Or as my wife says....cry a river, build a bridge, and get the hell over it!

I think this guy has already suffered bulb failure. Massively. Probably not from having it on too long, just defective.

Why not just get one of those radios that picks up TV freqs and leave that on all the time, or get a TV tuner card for your PC and leave that on all the time?

Hey dumb@ss, do some research. Also, let's consider simple economics here. DLPs are becoming much more common. How much do you think bulbs will cost in a year or two? They will go down in price.

Do some research. I really hope you get screwed at the store and have to pay some restocking fees. You've caused a few people at the store some work because you're too stupid to research ways to blow 1/4 of your yearly income.

I have a suggestion, get a job. Maybe if you had a job you wouln't feel the need to watch TV 16 hours a day, and on the upside your income level will increase such that you can afford the bulbs.

Ever wondered why you only make $14K? If you sleep 6-7 hours a day, there's not much time left to work.
