built an old gaming computer. need some autoexec.bat and config.sys tweaks

i built a computer with some old parts so I can play older games like MOnkey Island and Star Control 2 and Master of Orion and Sam & Max.

Everything is working fine, but I want to make it run efficiently.

The computer is a:
AMD K6-2 350
256 MB pc100
2.5 gig HD
SB AWE32 ISA
GeForce 2 MX w/ 32 megs ram
Teac 52x CD ROM

If everyone can recall, what are some nifty tweaks for your autoexec.bat and config.sys to make the system run better?

For the config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:0FF that zero in the word off is an "O". Damn fusetalk turned it into a smiley!
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO
FILESHIGH=80
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
FCBSHIGH=10
SWITCHES=/F
BUFFERS=99,8
FILES=200

Not sure about the autoexec.bat...don't really remember.

*Edit - forgot to mention the first two lines only apply for win9x, but if you're running DOS games that would be expected now wouldn't it? 😉

tweaks? thats WAY faster than you'd want for a dos box 😉

the problem is this:

I want to play Star Control 2... BADLY.

when i go into DOS mode, i load my sound drivers and such, but when i try to run the exe,

SC2 tells me it needs more RAM!!! wtf!! So i need to know how to manage himem.sys and emm386.exe well.

In dos I remember a little progam called " memmaker " , try running that.

Dude star control 2 and sam & max were some of the best games! Star Control 2... those programmers put so much time/effort into making that game replayable... and Sam & Max was one of the funniest games ever, laugh out loud funny...

You stole my idea! I guess we just think alike 😉

I'll be playing some good 'ol DOS goodies once the parts fall into place.

Nothing like classic games to rekindle your love of DOS 😉
