Just built a new system. 2 gigs of ram, evga 7800 gt, Amd 3000, Epox mobo, its nice. Anyway, I have one issue. When I play games on it (Quake 4, X-men Legends 2 and Fear,so far), all of a sudden as I am playing, the game will freeze up. I can still hear the audio, but cant move or anything. After about 10-30 seconds, the game resumes and I can play again. This is really getting to me. As a test, I installed and played Quake 2, and had absolutly no problems with that game. So whats the deal here, my gaming computer can not play the latest games? Can someone please help me?
 
I even turned all the settigs down to the lowest on FEAR and 5 minutes into the game, it froze for about 10 seconds, and then resumed. At that point I just exited the game.

Painkiller on the lowest setting froze as well. WTF is going on here. I think I am just gonna take this system apart and just save up for a alienware. I am not a big fan of alienware and I know theyre a rip off, but atleast it will play my games.
 
When it freezes and you still hear the audio, is it jittery audio? or is it regular as in the game continues but the video is out of sync?

1. Right off of the top of my head, I am thinking it may be your pagefile. You have 2 Gigs of RAM, and assuming you are running Windows XP, I believe it only addresses 1 Gig of RAM. It may be swapping to your hard drive improperly, at which point the game freezes. Try running one stick and adjust your pagefile settings. Make sure your hard drive is in good condition, if it is faulty, it could cause performance issues.

2. What about your temperatures? CPU temp, Videocard temp, MB temp etc.... Your system may be overheating.

3. Update all drivers and service packs.


I will think of more solutions, but give us some more information about what operating system you are using and if it is updated. Also, are you running any other type of software?? Anti-Virus, spyware/adware checkers?? There may be some service or software in the background using up your resources.
