Built a comp........won't POST.......big problems

OK so I built a comp for my friend and when we powered up it worked up until the memory check. When it finished the memory check it froze. So we just shut it off an dpowered up again after a few minutes. This time it got got through everything and asked for a system disk. WE din't have the Windows CD yet so we just turned it off so we could close up the case and move it. Then when the comp was all done we hit the power and the fans spun up......but the comp never came to life. Now every time we hit the power the fans will spin up and keep going for a bit then the comp will automatically power down. No beeps, no sounds, nothin. CPU burn out? Mad mobo? Hes got an Athlon Tbird 1ghz socket a running on a kt7. Need help.....

What fan/hs are you using. Is the mb + case properly mounted. Is it oc-ed, if it is, undo, if not, check seating of video card, ram.

hsf is from local store. Odd it powers up so i dont think its shorted and the proc heats up. If its burnt out will it still heat up?

Duhh maybe I should read the last sentence in your message.

Make sure the 20-pin power connector is fully seated. I've seen that before.
Could be a bad power supply - hook up a DVM if you have one too it.

Fenix,

When a 'trace' on the underside of the mobo shorts to ground, MANY different symptoms are possible. Your symptoms are classic for a shorted trace. Secondly, 1 gig TBIRDS are really toaster ovens in disguise !! You need an AMD approved heatsink for that bad boy, not something a local store sold you. 1 gig TBIRDS can burn in just 8secs with incorrect cooling.

I think I will give my .02 worth...mine did the exact same thing ....come to find out these athlons are very, very picky when it comes to the ram..I was using generic PC133 stuff and the comp wouldn't post...I removed it and put some name brand PC100 ram in and voila..it posted...my guess is RAM...

YES! it would power up if it was a short...that's exactly what it does. You didn't read my other post, did you...

I have the exact same problem.
KT7 Raid, duron 700, mushkin 133 value ram, G2 Mx, FongKai Case.

I thought it was shorting too, so i pulled out the mobo from the case and set it on the plastic rapping that the mobo came with. Same result. It detects video, cpu, mem than it hangs... (I hear one beep).

I have no idea what is wrong with it. I am about to take it to the local shop and have them built it....

Any ideas?

yb.

yea, my friends comp would "turn on" but wouldn't do anything like you described. He changed his power supply and all the problems disappeared

I'm not sure about the Tbird, but I KNOW what's wrong with your Duron youngblood.
You have a week 31 or later Duron, and a KT7 with a TL BIOS.

Here's the skinny: AMD changed the specs of the Duron after manufacturers had already made motherboards for them. The default core voltage went from 1.5 to 1.6, but the KT7 doesn't know this, so it doesn't give it the right amount of juice. Thus, you get to post, and nothing happens. Easy to fix. Very easy. You can call Abit and get a new CMOS chip sent to you free of charge, or you can simply connect some of the L7 connectors with a #2 pencil, to change the default volatge of the chip, and the motherboard will see that and give it enough juice. Then you can get in and flash the BIOS, or change the amount of voltage the CPU is getting, or whatever.

It's under boot problems.

You might check it out and give it a try for your Tbird, too, Fenix. Like I said, I don't know if it works for both, but they DO use the same core. I know the Tbird requires even MORE voltage than a duron, so this may very well be the problem.

Good luck,

Youngblood,

Hopefully you loaded the UL BIOS and then removed the L7 connector. Probably not good to leave the L7 bridge connected for the long term.

hello.
Yes, DaddyG.
I flushed my bios with UL version.
I also removed (erased) the bridge to test if the bios update worked.

When I looked at the bios after it boot (b4 the update), the voltage was 1.625v. Does having 0.025 more volts pumped into the cpu that bad?

I'm gonna try to oc and I was planning to up the voltage to get around 900mhz.

Thanks for the info!

Nope, just creates more heat so good cooling helps stability. I have my duron at 1.85v and would like to go to 1.9 actually. Might get 10x to work.
