My friend wants to build a new AMD system for high-end gaming. what CPU, mobo and video card should he use.his system now is a Athlon XP 1600 with a soyo k7ada mobo wants a faster system than this one. not o/c ed. he will not be overclocking this system. under the weekly hardware prices it says the XP 2000+ is $94 is this a good deal for a gaming rig or should he go higher. he wants to spend some money, not looking for the cheapest stuff. he said something about a self updating mobo iam new to this iam not sure about that. thanks for any help.

I don't think there will be much of a difference from the 1600+ and a 2000+. I'm not sure what chipset his current mobo uses, but I would just recommend getting a kt333 mobo and overclocking the 1600+ to 166fsb. I easily got mine there with pc2100 and no extra voltage on a MSI kt3 ultra2 $80. then a ti4200 or ti4400 would be fine for gaming

which KT333 ( the soyo)would you use. from what i have seen the Albatron ti4200 tubro would be a good buy. I am new at this and have not overclocked yet. dont know if he wants to o/c.

Well he needs to get a KT400 chipset board!!!

Here's what I suggest:

Gigabyte 7VAXP
Corsair 512mb PC3200 DDR

Set the ram in the bios at the TURBO settings (most aggressive ;) )
Soyo's are to expensive for the same features and you can't OC as
good on those boards.

This will limit OCing if he wants to but it yields great performance.

Keep the CPU, wait until the Barton core comes out.
If he REALLY wants a new cpu now though the best bang
for the buck is the 2000+

Here is what I suggest :) :

Highend. If he wants a true gaming computer this is the way to go:

AXP 2000+ $94
ATI RADEON 9700 PRO $365
Epox 8k3a $69
512MB DDR 2700 ~$150

= $678

(Prices taken from www.Newegg.com)

More than enough for gaming:

AXP 2000+ $94
Epox 8k3a $69
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 $115
256 2700 DDR ~$80

=$358

You can also mix those to get a nice price.

yet again though, he already has a 1600+ and I'm pretty sure the 2000+ won't give THAT much of a performance gain to spend the extra $94. I would say just use an epox or msi kt333 board and keep the 1600+, overclock or not, until the price of a 2400+ or something higher end drops. It's not really ever a good idea to get the top of the line videocard, so I would vote on a ti4200, 4400, or a RAD9500. By the time any game comes out that will need or actually perform better with the 9700 there will be a better and cheaper card.

from what i have seen i think just upgrading the motherboard and memory and getting a good video card would be a good choice. getting the ATI Redeon 9700 pro may not need to upgrade for a long time.the athlon xp 2200+ is going for $159 would that help this system alot or alittle ? :)
