Building system for my sister...

I'm putting together a computer for my sister when she goes to college at the end of August. I've purchased all the parts I need except the video card because I'm not sure which one to get her. She won't need 3D as I highly doubt she'll be playing any games at all.

I've been looking at an ATI XPert98, Jaton TNT2 Vanta, and a 3DFX V3 2000.

Any suggestions for what I should do?

I would recommend either the Matrox G200, or G400. They've got the best 2D image quality in the graphics card market.

Get a cheap 16mb SH OEM G400 because it has the best 2d, very good drivers and then she has the option on playing games if she wants

get the v3 2000, its cheapest and good enough, comparing what's in that price range. The G400 is way out there compared to a v3 2000, best bang for the buck especially with the rebate; $100 to $40 or lower. Otherwise a G200 would be nice, but you also have to get a good monitor for 2d to be good.

Does it need to be upgradable? If not, get an i810 board with integrated video. If she won't be playing any games anyway you can save a bit of money and the picture is more than acceptable.

I'd go with the Ati All in Wonder as well.

If you go with a card without a tv tuner, definitely get one.

It'd come in handy.

Bobberfet is right on. The 2d integrated into the i810 is really great for non-gamers. But if you already have the motherboard, any of the ones you listed would do. I would stay away from the Jaton boards though. The xpert98 is probably one of the cheapest and has VERY mature drivers at this point.

now that the v5s are out the v3s are dropping in price tremendously. like less than $40. there was a post for $11 voodoo 3ks on hotdeals two days ago. keep on that or another deal page like fatwallet to get closeout prices on a card with some of the best 2d image quality, and speedy 3d to boot.
