CPU: (probly sempron)
MOBO: no idea
Memory: no idea 512 to 1gb
Case: no idea

thanks guys this is for my frined who has everything else.

For 200$ dont think it will be done. Of course this depends on what you have on hand.

Taking a 939 motherboard with a 1.8 gihertz Winchester AMD,and 512MB of Ram,80Gb hardrive,Pwr and Case ,Operating System Software will set you back at ...minimum 550$

You would have a longer upgrade path with this.

Taking the XP type boards your looking at the Socket 462s ...
462 MB (Nvidia2 min ,or Via Chipset),Sempron (whatever speed-there are plenty to choose from to about 100+),512MB DDR Ram (check type- older ram sometimes cost same as new DDR400 for example),Pwr and Case,Operating System Software will set you back for ....340.00 minimum....

Taking a AMD 754 you still consider the RAM,Case/Pwer Supply Operating System software will cost the same (depending on what you choose be sure the pin count is correct on pwr/case combinations)...is a minimum of 400$...

You can query online proprieties at retail for example : Newegg.com (wwws if you want to go)...query 462,.754,.939 for processors, motherboards to see a list of products/prices. Same can be done with memory types, cases. In all instances though, the Operating System software can be less expensive if you purchase it with your purchase, since you can take an OEM price at the vendor. Using an XP HomeE upgrade can save you some bucks as well if while you are building your system you can use the old full version disk to install it. Not sure if XPHome is available in OEM.

Make a list based on the parts you have chosen for the processor type you have chosen. Check the cost.Making sure that equipment is compatable while your at it.

The monitor/display I did not include to the suggestion. But you might find a cheapy CRT for less than 100$ (search for them too). Then upgrade it later.

Wont do this for 200$.Unless you already have some compatible hardware wich can work with the motherboard...keyboard,mouse (PS/2),monitor (svga),video card(AGP,PCIe,PCI)...

Nvidia2 Chipset(AMD 462) with Sempron is a good starter combination.

ATIs RS480M2 (AMD 939) with Winchester 1.8 is also a good starter, since its onboard video is usable ,and wont have to buy a video card. Will be upgradable to most versions of AMD top of the line processors. It also has lan onboard wich is a must. And is a m-atx board.

If all you have is $200, look on Ebay for a used PC.

However, if for some reason you are against buying anything used, it is possible to get a new PC for $200, provided you already have an operating system and all necessary peripherals (keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor, printer, etc.). Here's what you can get:

VIA C3 "Samual 2" 2000+ (800 MHz core clock, 133 MHz FSB)
128 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM
integrated graphics
40 GB hard disk
DVD-ROM drive
10/100 LAN
stereo audio
56K modem
front USB 2.0 ports
GRAND TOTAL (SHIPPING INCLUDED): $198.02 (tax not applicable outside of CA)

Crazy, huh? Below are the links.

Yes, I know; that's why I suggested he buy used. I gave that configuration more or less as an example of why buying a $200 PC really isn't a good idea in the first place.

There's a post in the hot deals forum about a MOBO and Semperon combo for about $120.00. Sorry that I don't have the time to link to it. In there, someone was discussing their upgrade to a whole new machine for around $200. I think it's at CompUSA. Good luck.

So that's all you need? You'll be using an old video card, hard drive, optical drives, keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor?

That's a strange thing to say. Is $100 shipping OK?

Anyway, given those requirements, the best deal I could find is:

CPU: AMD 90nm Socket 754 Sempron 2600+ Retail $74.00
mainboard: Biostar NF325-A7 (NF3 250)$53.00
RAM: Corsair 1 x 512MB DDR400 $41.00
case: Athenatech X350 black ATX $32.00

That's $200.00 before shipping, $220.47 after shipping.

That PSU has a 16A 12V rail, so it should be a lot better than most cheap cases. The specs say it has an 80mm fan, but I don't see it in the pictures. I don't really like that.

Since you can squeeze a 90nm Sempron in the budget, that would probably be much better than about anything else, even if you were looking at heavily discounted used systems.
