Building Sealed Box for Sub

Im buying a 10" Polk dX sub for my car. A friend of mine wants to build me a sealed box. Is it possible that he could build one that would be as good as teh $65 one Crutchfield has for my sub? He estimates he'll need $20 for materials.

I have a sealed box for two Kicker competition 8s. It cost us about $17 in materials(not including beer and Taco Bell) and it works great.

the box will be a whole let better if it's built to specs of the sub.......just make sure he uses 3/4" MDF.....good luck.

yeah you can build an equivalent box for much less. like xero said, you gotta use 3/4" mdf. NOT regular particle board! and all the joints have to be stiff, otherwise you'll get rattles. so that means dowl pins maybe, wood glue, and screws, not nails. as for the size of the box, go here to learn how to pick the right box size. or find the dimensions of the crutchfield box and just copy it.

damn 17 bucks? sh*t, i spent like 30 on materials when i built my dual 8" box. but that included sealent, 3/4 mdf, grills, and screws.

oh well, soon to be building a box for a 12" and a amp. a combined amp rack and 12" custom box for my ack "station wagon".

the trunk should be used for something. i mean it's not like i'm gonna go out and buy groceries or anything. i mean at frist i wanted a 24" sub custom fit into the back cover in the trunk. but 2 grand for a sub is a lil too much.

Oh well...it's better to build you own box. just make sure to tune/build it to the exac specs your sub needs.

We didn't buy any grills because the subs face into the box. We also only got 5/8th inch mdf since the subs are not getting more than 100 watts rms each.

damn, i was wondering how come your materials were so cheap. oh well. time to go out and look for some subs. i want a pair of 8's or a pair of 10's, nothing bigger.

Oh, come on...it's much better to buy the store-made boxes...otherwise, you don't get the quality 30 dollar carpeting...

Yeah it should cost around 15 bucks for a box....just be sure to use lotsa screws...and predrill...mdf likes to split. When ur done, seal the seams on the inside with a non-silicon sealant. Oh and make sure you have the correct box volume...thas why making ur own box is sometimes better...the store bought ones don't always have the right volume.

hey guys...this is the friend building his box....thanx for all the suggestions...all of which were pretty much in line with my own methods

i'm estimating that my whole expenses will be between 15-20 bucks...i have all the materials except the wood...i've done this quite a few times

one question i do have...he has a subaru legacy...i wanna kno if i should install the amp in the trunk, or under his seat...i want good ventilation but i also wanna save money on wiring

i think the trunk will have to do...its quite a large amp
