Building problem ABIT NF7/M and Sempron

I'm trying to build a system based on an Abit NF7-M board and a Sempron 2500. When I switch on at the back the status light comes on which is right. When I press the power switch the power status light on the board comes on which is right, as does the power led light on the case. The Nvidia chipset fan and the CPU fan come to life. But nothing else does. No VGA. No spinning up of hard disk. I've tried a VGA card (as opposed to onboard), I've tried different RAM (it's Crucial PC2700, 512MB). The only things that are left that I can think of are the board and the CPU. The BIOS may need flashing to recognise the Sempron correctly, but it should still boot shouldn't it?

I'm possibly missing something obvious. If I am, please could someone put me out of my misery!
Thanks

I have the 4-pin MB power connector plugged in - I shall try clearing the CMOS later on - I'm away from it now

Thanks for your help

Finally managed to get back to this - nope, cleared CMOS, checked connections, and still no joy

Just checking - you clear the CMOS when power to the machine is completely OFF, right?

What should I do next?

Got an older socket A chip handy that you could temporarily install in that board? If so, do it. It system POSTS, flash to latest BIOS. If not, RMA board.
