Building P4

I'm thinking about building a P4 machine using the 800FSB 3.2
My question is, RAM only comes up to a PC4400 which is 533mhz, does this create a bottleneck and can you get ram that also runs at 800mhz? I'm used to athlon machines where you get great performance from matching the ram and chip, ie.400mhz.
Thanks

Intel bus of 800 is quad pumped fsb of 200mhz. with ddr533 you have a lot of room to overclock your fsb from 200 all the way to the ddr533 of 266.5mhz which equals to theoretical max bus of 1066mhz.

ok, i forgot about that quad bumping thing.
So, in basic terms, i can match the 800FSB with this RAM?
And i will be prepared for any future chips that have higher FSB's?
Or i can OC the system to an overall higher FSB of 1000+?

am i correct in this?

Yes, you can match pc4400 ram with a 800 bus chip for max oc from 800 to 1066.

Preparing for future chips - you have to choose your motherboard wisely has intel has way too many variations in platforms. although i have a friend who just bought an lga775 and she's happy with it.

oc to 1000+ is very doable on stable boards from asus and abit with good cooling.

check www.overclockers.com their cpu database to get a general feel on what people have, the boards they use, cooling solutions and how long have they been running it, including the volt mods to the cpu core and/or ram.

If you aren't overclocking, you just use PC3200.

The Guides and Motherboards sections of the main AT site might have some useful articles to bring you up to speed.

FYI the Athlon A64 3200+ offers better gaming performance if you don't have your heart set on a P4.

i think if u put the ram sticks in dual channel.. = 800mhz (2x400), then again, this might just give more bandwidth not speed nm

What are you going to be doing with this new machine ? Whats wrong with your 2500 ? I see you didn;t OC your 2500 at all, why not ? It should run close to 3200+ speed on air !

The benchmarks says that Athlon 64 is the best PC processor in the planet, and also the experience of hundreds of people in this forum. From our experience intel s°cks. The Athlons 64 Smokes every pentium 4 out there, haven't you seen the bencmarks. The presscot can not beat even the northwoods, besides they get extremely HOT!!. Hyperthreading it s°cks.

You don't know what you are talking about.
The athlon 64 really do smoke every pentium 4, especially in games watch the benchmarks son... You can say whatever you want, but here are the benchmarks , that don't lie. Take a look at the benchmarks, and we'll talk when you have learned something.

That is enough. Just show me 6 or 7 benchmarks where the P4 defeats the latest A64, I will show you 20 or 30 where the A64 REALLY SMOKES P4.

carlos: who are you talking to?
Are you hijacking my thread?
Make your own.

Mark: This is for a buddy. I had my 2500 oc'd to 2.1 and i had stability issues with the 9700 locking up. I brought it back down and went fromk 33k on aquamark3 to 32500. Not a big difference imo.

Dave: You are correct, but we may OC it knowing we can now.

Phoenix:Thanks for the help.

I just was trying to avoid you to make a mistake getting a P4. I am pretty sure you won't feel happy after running a P4 3.2. You'll have wasted your money. Changing the 2500+ for an athlon 64 will really make a difference, but if you want to waste your money, it is your problem.

is it truth that Amds are better over clockers than pen 4s? then if your looking to build a system for over clocking amd it, if not p4 it. but a lot out there will say dont waste your time money on the p4 anyway. I have nothing against both worlds, but if i had a son or daughter and either wanted a p4 no matter how much im against or for it. I'll help em acquire it.

But that is like wiping before you poop. IT DONT MAKE SENSE!

If I had kid and they wanted a P4(example) and I was strongly against it, unless they are paying for it, I would not help them with a decision that I know they would later regret.

So lemme get this straight, You guys all seem to agree the (non OC'd) Pentium 3.2 800mhz FSB 1gb cache chip is not as powerful and the Athlon64 @ 400fsb.

Is that what we're saying

yes, and i have a athlon 64 3000+ while my brother has a p4 3.0 GHz, and there are no 1gb cache chips
