Building over six months

Mainly, this will be what to buy when. I'm not a heavy duty gamer. However, I was a huge lover of, and addicted to the original everquest for 4 years. I've been out of computer games for over a year now. Matter of fact, my only computer is a powerbook. (Yes, I've gone Mac!)

However, Vanguard:Saga of Heroes, a MMORPG is due out sometime this year. It marks the return of Brad McQuaid and the "Vision", which I fell in love with for the original EQ. So, its time to start a new computer. Considering the timeline, its foolish to start considering processor, motherboard, vid card. I expect I can start picking up case, power supply, sound card and hard drive in that order.

Whatever processor I get will be dual core.
I'm not a fan of overclocking, but I do plan on over clocking very modestly. (one or two bumps at most)

So, what case, power supply, sound card, and hard drive would you recommend? Are any major changes for any of those coming around in the near future?

AM2 will be coming, a new socket.


a build over 6 months is hard to predict for.

things WILL change in 6 months.

I wouldn't buy anything now. If your building it in six months you really should just wait till then to start picking out parts

Put your money in the highest interest savings account you can find and hold on. Save as much as you can and in 6 months break that piggy bank open.

And then when you decide to actually build that rig six months from now, there are other changes on the horizon 4-6 months from that point.. and so on.. and so on...

With the way technology is, you cannoot predict what rig you plan on building six months from now.... The moment you receive any new hardware, and pull it out of the box to install, its obselete and its value depreciated. At that point, you are no longer up with the "Jones's"; you'll need to upgrade..

If you have a budget, my opinion is to buy as much as you can possible. That should be sufficient enough for long term use. Ok.. so its not top of the line.. who cares..
