Hello all,

I'm building an old-school game gaming computer. I need advice as to what OS to install.

i'm running an AMD K6-2 350. I have all the proper DOS and win9x drivers for my hardware.

I have DOS and Win 95 games to play. I was thinking Win 98 SE would be fine. But some people told me to install Win 95 OSR2 instead. what does everyone think?

Go with Windows98se. When I was playing the older games I didn't have a problem running them in 98se. I was playing the Monkey Island series, King's quest series, Gabriel Knight series.... That's all I can think of right now. Anywho, they all ran fine. Then can Windows 2000... ug... dont get me started :)

My two cents.

"older" games, esp those that run in DOS, I found run a whole lot better in 98se then XP/2K. There have been some posts i've read everywhere, and in my own opinion :), even when running old programs in "compatability mode" there not as responsive as they were with 98se. Mouse lag etc..etc.

Almost forgot... Windows ME... some individuals say they haven't had any problems with it... I never got it to run for any length of time without it totaly farting apart. :) Any usual hiccups in 98se seemed to me to have amplified in WinME. Just getting into DOS mode is a pain in the backside in WinME.

Specifically, ME makes it very difficult to control emm386, which is essential for DOS games. Stick with 98SE. Or even better, find an old 100 Mhz 486DX4 with DOS 6.x on it.

In my experience, on older Pentium/PentiumII/K6-2 machines, Win95B runs a whole lot faster than Win98SE. :Q

I also agree. Win98SE is the best choice, but don't skimp on the memory. The more the better.
If you have Win2000Pro you should even try that route. Win2000Pro runs well on a 350Mhz cpu, but again put plenty of memory in your machine. Win2000Pro is super stable and will run any prog that Win98SE will. It also supports plug and play!
