He wants to stay with iNtel, I mentioned the P4 1.6a to him and he sounds interested.
I've set up several overclocked systems successfully but so far no P4's.
He is upgrading, so he already has a HDD, sound & video - just wants a new mobo, cpu & ram.
His existing system is a P3 933, I have no idea if the ATX case he has will accomodate a P4 mobo.
Should he go with a P4 approved case & PS also?

Any recommendations on a place to buy mobo, cpu & ram?

What's the best mobo to go with considering it does not need built in audio / video on board?

Thanks ;)

Hey Wiz. I think I can help you on most of your questions here. I had a p3 933 before I built my current P4 1.4. I used the same PS for the 1.4 as I did w\ my 933 and it works fine; however, I am not OC'd either. From what I have read from the guys on here, that are well beyond my skillz in computing, I think if you are going to OC the chip then you WILL want a stout P4 PS, somewhere in the 400-450w range. Not knowing what type of case he has I wouldn't say he needs 1, but cases are pretty cheap so depending on his budget you could get the PS and new case for $50 to $100, and beyond.

As far as the place to buy the componets, mwave.com is a very good place to buy items. You can do the www.pricewatch route also, or www.newegg.com.

On which mobo, ram & cpu to go with, agn, depends on the budget. I'm getting rdy to build a P4 2.26 w\ 512 Rambus 1066 ram on a Gigabyte GA-81hxp $840 bucks for the parts shipped to the door, for a buddy.

You can step dwn a little in spd and go w\ some PC2700 or 3000 DDR 512ram for around$150 to $172 (Corsair),

If he has dell, compaq, etc. I would just go ahead and replace the case and be sure it comes with a 350 watt or higher power supply. Newegg has several Maxtop cases with 350 watt ps for $35-49. I would go for the 1.6a or 2.26 with some samsung pc2700 memory. The favorite ddram boards are the asus p4s533 or epox 4g4a or 4g4a+.

Hey Wiz, you can get him a EIDE 80.0GB Deskstar 120GXP ATA/100 7200RPM for $83.48 shipped @ http://www.technologybazaar.com/ He might not need it, but for $7 & change he needs it.lol On that 1.6gig chip, make sure before you order it that it is a Northwood. If it doesnt say 1.6a, it probably isnt an A. A=Northwood. :D

Thanks, actually I was thinking more along the lines of a good used 20 Gb drive from the forsale forum for $25 - $30 since this is just going to replace a drive in his wifes machine that is just used for keeping the books & WP.

He hasn't let me know yet what he wants to do, what's an equivalent upgrade with AMD?
Do you still have to connect the dots on the newer AMD CPU's to get them to up the fsb / multiplier?
