I'm looking at processors right now, what is the difference between the Socket 754 and the 939 Athlon 3000+. would either one work with the VNF4/Ultra board, which I think I will go with as I found 1 for $120.

That's a Socket 939 board. You can get that and a PCI-e 6600GT Graphics card and a AMD 3000+ Winchester
and pay about $100.00 more.

If you want to know the difference check out the link I posted.

One of my buddies has a socket 939 3000+ that he isn't using, I'm trying to get him to sell it to me for cheap, the only real problem left is the graphics card, where is the best place to get a 6600-GT, or something comparable for the least amount of money?

Awesome, so right now heres how its looking:

$120 CHAINTECH NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU, Model "VNF4/Ultra"
$137 1 GB Mushkin PC3200
~$150 Athlon socket 939 3000+
$99 Antec Sonata Case w/ 380W psu

$506 total -shipping, so probably closer to $600.

Looks like I am going to go over my budget

I still need to nail down a video card, harddrive, and CD/DVD*

*I don't need anything fancy here, probably not even a burner, just a good combo drive for playback

Video card is easy. 6600GT ~$200.
If you want to game, don't skimp here.

PC gaming isn't cheap. Thats why they still sell so many PS2's and XBox's. 🙂

That is true...the 6600 GT looks like the best one, now comes the brand name for it. Does it matter which brand I go with? PNY, Leadtek, XFX, Chaintech, eVGA? Is any particular one better than another, cuz there sure is some price differences.

EVGA is usually a good bet. Check the reviews on Newegg, and do a search for 6600GT here. You will see plenty of threads about this.
