Building new home PC-recommand motherboard

I am working on to build a new home PC with Intel P4 1.6 or 1.7 Ghz, and looking to go for ASUS p4T MB. Any other better idea for motherboard?

I like the Asus p4s333

It uses DDR, which is so much cheaper than RDRAM

I recommended this mobo plus a p4 1.6 plus 256 megs of kingmax pc2700 ram and he put it together last night. said it was super easy and seems to be rock solid

that statement is getting old...if you look, prices may differ around 5.00 per stick, someplaces I've seen RDRAM cheaper than DDR.

From pricewatch:

256Megs of PC2100: Generic, $50. Crucial, $70
256Megs of PC2700 (Needed on P4S333 or it's not worth getting over 850): $71
256Megs of PC800: Generic $66, Samsung $75

So, as you can see, there is next to no difference between PC2700 and PC800. I really would suggesting taking Asus P4T-E because future Northwood's will use a 533fsb and will benefit much more from it on a RDRAM platform.

Whilst the difference between the pricing of RDRAM and DDR RAM is no longer such an issue there is still a difference and I would suggest going with the DDR Ram and using the money you save to buy a better video card or the like.

Using a 533fsb P4 with the PC800 RAM you have listed pricing for will require the memory to run asycronously from the CPU which will involve a performance hit so the combination might not perform as well as you'd expect. Also moving to a 533fsb will allow the DDR RAM to run sychronously so it will perform better than you might expect.

Obviously running PC1050 RDRAM with the new processor would be the best option but will probably make the price comparison statement upto date again. Also you'll need a new motherboard etc...

Stay away from the P4T and go for the P4T-E - you want a socket 478 mobo so you can upgrade to Northwood P4 CPU later on, or at least have the option to.

Is the P4t-e the only motherboard that has the i850 chipset for socket 478?
