HI Andrew

I just completed building my own computer. Total Disappointment!!!! Building the computer is the ez part. The companies that manufacture the parts just dont give a damn.
I bought a Intel p4 2.8 and the fan sounds like a cheap untuned 4 cyclinder car that has 200,000 miles on it. I also purchased a Western Digital hard drive that make a annoying rattling sound. How I wished I bought a Dell. Building your own computer is like throwing money into a crap hole.

Without proper research and knowledge before hand then yes it is like throwing your money into a hole. Prefabricated Dells are for people like you. If he has the time and patience to research everything (with some input from us) then his system would work out very well.

That is your very sad personal opinion, not fact. BTW, all the computers I have now (3) were custom built.

Hi Again

What good is planning! When the companies that manufacture the parts have no ethics?
If companies that manufacture the parts would publish their DOA rates, I think alot of them would go out of business overnight. I bought all the best names u can buy and got nothing but junk. I paid a premium for Intel and found out the fan supplied with their CPU is a Sanyo piece of junk!!

You do realize that people have build pc's over here that will outwit a Dell by a long way and also will look way more snazzy. BTW I have a Dell myself and even though its well built, I feel that I am restricted in a lot more ways compared to computer that you would build by yourself. Also for the same price, you could blow a Dell right out of the water.

I second that. I've built 5-6 computers and I will NEVER buy a retail computer again. You just can't personalize/customize it the way you can one that you built. ie if you want a via chipset vs the nforce3 - you choose that not some buyer from dell that got a better deal on the nforce chipset. IMHO

Afaik, Dell exclusively uses Intel chips, so buying one wouldn't have helped with your HSF's noise problem. I'm sorry to hear about your unsatisfactory experience building your own machine. On the other hand, my experiences doing it have been good, and I've enjoyed saving money by building faster, less expensive systems. Seems to be a personal thing, and Dell does have a good reputation, nothing wrong with buying one. Every company has a few defective products that slip through the cracks; doing research will help you avoid the more problem-prone brands/models, and buying from a good company (I'm very fond of Newegg) with a good return/exchange policy will help you out in case you do get a lemon.

Ummm...where do you think companies like Dell get their parts? They don't make their own hard drives and processors ya know.

For the original poster...you basically have the exact setup I do and I absolutely love it. Take your time and go for it...trust me you won't regret it.

i would never buy a retail computer ever again for MYSELF! if a family member insists on buying a dell or so, sure, wut the hell. but for me, i take pride in my own creation and effort into making a better computer then can be bought. its all about having it your way, not what dell has available to you. if you know enough about computers, then yes, you can make a much better computer then, say dell, in every way. my own warranty is my knowledge about computers. dell is not known for performance, they are known for reliability. i also wouldnt consider dell to be cheap. sure, they can sell a whole system for $400, but i can make one much much much betteer for that price, cuz i mean, a 2.8ghz celeron trails behind a 1.6 or 1.8 duron. anyways, if you want to know of any problems, just make sure that you set the jumpers on EVERYTHING to how it should be, like cd drives, harddrives, and mobo jumpers. also, make sure you connect the switches correctly and plug in everything else correctly. i've built tons of computers lately, so ya, i know of all the problems you can get into. you can start building your computer now if you want. if you have any questions or run into any trouble, email me @ mikey@volleyball.com. i check my email like a million times a day, and i'll be more hten glad to help out. in fact, i'm in the mood of building a comp right now! :D

btw, dont spend the whole $2000 on the computer at first. save like $100 of it for any "aftermath-upgrades" like better fans or better CPU fan or better psu, or on a hooker or wutever. :) if you're all set with the perfect equipment, then start buildin.

As far as motherboard makers go, aside from PC Chips, ECS has the highest DOA rate, at an amazing 3 percent. This tells you that they're at least doing something right part of the time.

Ironically, Dell uses intel's cooling solution (eg the sanyo/foxconn hsf) on their pcs, so I'm thinking you just got a bad egg. Things happen.

As to the original poster, there's a good many guides online that show you step by step how to assemble a computer among all the other basics. I'm sure the people around here wouldn't mind helping either, ne?
