Here are the two setups I'm looking at...

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939
Asus AV8 Deluxe mobo
1GB Kingston ValueMax PC3200 Dual Channel RAM
80GB WD EIDE HD
XFX Geforce 6600GT PCI-E

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
ASUS A7V880 mobo
Same RAM
Same HD
Same card, but AGP

Is it worth the extra 130 bucks or so it would cost me to go with an Athlon 64 3200+(socket 939) over the XP 3200+?

Go for the A64. XP is dying, there's no sense buying a Socket A platform now at all. The Athlon64 will be faster, and between socket 939 and PCI-E, you will have much more upgrade potential a few years down the road (it's conceivable that you'll be able to get a cheap dual core and some new graphics card into that thing 3 years from today, suddenly reviving it into a power system).

dude...there are like 2 of these threads floating around here...read them before starting another thread..

That being said..welcome to the forums...

I personally avoid Asus (too high priced and not the best anymore) and Via...get an NF4 mobo and be set for dual core cpus later. I have heard nothing on any future support for dual core by Via chipset mobos....I wouldn't risk it

Also that board does not support pci-e....
